crawled under my 2002 vette today to change out starter but I can't see how it comes out short of dropping the exhaust. Is that what needs to be done or is there another way?
Yes, the exhaust must come out.
You will need to:
1. Disconnect the battery before you start to work
2. Remove the O2 sensors
3. Remove the exhaust
You will need to remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold. (Use Penetrating Oil on the Exhaust Flange Bolts 24 hours before you disconnect them)
One or two of the studs may still break. After the starter and/or solenoid work is done then you can replace the stud or studs that broke. If you can’t do this part of the job, a trip to the local muffler is cheap. This kind of thing happens all the time and they can fix it.
4. Remove wires on the starter
5. Remove the 2 bolts on the starter (13mm socket w/long extension). The starter will pull right out.
When you put the wires back, make sure they are clean and tight. I use dielectric grease to keep them clean and making good contact.
Good luck

It wouldn't hurt to take a pic of the wiring attached to starter for later reference. Seems like there is a lot of wires attached. I tied mine together like they were on the starter just to be sure.
Thanks for pointing that out as I did not think of that.
If you have headers, you must loosen the passenger side header.
You do not have to remove it but it does have to be very loose.
Note: When you bolt the header back up it may leak. You might want to put in a new gasket. That is up to you.
I didn't even loosen the starter when I put my headers on after hearing about how hard it is too put everything back on! Now that I said that mine will probably go....guess I should go knock on wood!
