My 2000 vette start to vibrate at about 35mph to around 45mph, pretty bad, you can see it in the hood and steering wheel. Don’t know if it is balancing, some one said it could be the tires, they are about 4 year old run craps, only drive on the weekend. They look pretty good still have some life to them. If I have to replace the tires right now, I would only like to replace the two front one. Any guidance?
You can take your car to any tire shop and have them rebalance the tires. Make sure you ask for a roadforce balance. They put load on the tire to simulate the road and balance the tire.Hence the name"roadforce" balance....
thanks for the reply, agree the balance is the first course to take, but everyone i talk to, seem to believe that the shaking at the low speed was something else, like tires.
Yeah, shaking due to imbalance usually comes in right at 60 MPH.
If it's as low as 35, then a slipped belt on a tire would be the most likely suspect. However, the fix is the same; have a tire shop check them out. Have you turned the wheel and checked the inner edge of the tread? Many C5's tend to wear really bad on the inside edge. If it gets bad enough that could cause a low-speed shake. My nephew's were down to the cord, but he never noticed, cause the outside edges were fine.
If you want to replace just the front, you should stick with a similar runflat tire - they say it's not good to mix regular and runflats together.
You could look here on parts for sale and probably pick up a pretty good set of front Goodyears for a good price. Then buy all four new ones when you got more wear on them all.
update, took it in to have the tire balance, it seem the problems seem to be a bend rim. this is tough. no money, was hoping to spend my money, went i had the money, on a whole set of c6 z rim. tough times.
If in fact the wheel is bent it should be replaced. The car should not be driven with a damaged wheel that causes the type of shaking and vibration you describe in your post.
