A week ago I had to bring my baby to the dealer to investigate a clutch glitch and she has only 9000 miles!
I have read other posts and mine was experiencing the same problem.......taking off in 1st gear over 3000rpm the clutch did not engage (lagged, slipped) this happened twice on a single drive. When taking off at a regular launch this symptom did not occur.
I said screw it and brought her to the dealer the next day. No feed back from the dealer yet but I was hoping someone out there may be able to shed some light.
As you said there have been many accounts of this symptom since the car was released. It has to be the clutch not grabbing for whatever reason. I don't think it's the fault of the hydraulics, just a weak stock clutch assembly that cannot cope with the shock of a 3000+ RPM engagement from a dead stop.
Are you dumping the clutch or feathering it when this happens? I had it happen to me twice with my original clutch when dumping over 3k but never when feathering at 3k or greater. The clutch always grabbed fine after a bad slip session as well. It was like it never happened aside from the smell...
The stock clutch is garbage. Hated it from the get go. I've got a star clutch now that has been totaly redesigned and I'm testing it out. Love the feel so far and it hasn't slipped as of yet. If and when you add more power, a new clutch will be imperative.
The stock diaphragm clutch is an overcenter type. At high RPMs centrifugal force holds it disengaged, not engaged. If it even grabs
slowly or lightly because of this, the heat generated from he slippage brings the coef of friction way down, making it feel like it's in neutral. The cure: A Cartek (or other ) good aftermarket clutch.
I've had the same experience. My dealer will replace the clutch with another stock clutch, but I"m not interested in that. I"m hoping to get an 02 Z06 clutch. I've told my dealer I will pay for the clutch if they will cover the install. Have not gotten back to them yet.

Hey Jim,
Which dealer did you go to? Do they sound like they are MOD friendly?
Tuan, I don't really know if they are mod friendly or not. What I do know is they are "Jim Schindler" friendly. I have bought 8 cars from them in the last 6 years, I drive 45 miles (past many other dealers) to buy from them. I know the owner pretty well and deal directly with him. They are good people, but I can't say how much of what they do is because of my loyalty, and they know I take good care of my cars. The dealer is Robbins in Humble.
I didn't wait to long to get the opportunity to change my stock clutch to a STAR lll unit. Right after(800-900miles) the slave cylinder went out or maybe the master?? I asked about the problem on the forum and was told either one was the problem. The peddle all the way on the floor and the clutch was STILL engaged, a bitch to drive also. While the dealer was suppost to do a slave cyclnder /master cyl warrenty job the "mechanic" desided to take the clutch disc out and claim that it was the AFTER MARKET disc that was bad. Well after some time with the manufacture I desided to have it all put back as is. The dealer did change out both cylinders and then comenced to put the disc in BACKWARDs which tore up the disc hub. And the dealer WON"T REPAY ME FOR THEIR DAMAGES TO MY NEW CLUTCH!!
If you don't have a factory clutch watch out for the dealer/mechanic. If you have a stock clutch GO ofr the '02 Z06 unit for replacement as it is a little better than the '01 junk....... :chevy
I wore out the stock clutch and installed a McLeod Single Disc with An Aluminum Flywheel. I liked it alot but it had a hard time releasing at high rpm. Turns out the master needed to be replaced with the Adjustable unit. At the time the Adjustable unit was not invented... so I had to live with it.
Since then I have completely replaced my clutch assembly with an all new McLeod Dual Disc Clutch assembly with Aluminum Flywheel, AP Master & Z06 Slave. This system works Great!! It grabs like a champ and does not slip at all!! Both single disk clutches had slippage and I am very happy with my new setup. Total cost for all the parts and labor $3800.
Thanks for all of the posts.
I spoke to Cormier (the dealer) and I should find out some info on 2/4/02. So far they have been very helpful they finally fixed that pesky fuel gauge problem.
About the McLeod, by adding the after market clutch does it void the drive train warranty? I have read other posts that claim the stock (weak clutch) was used purposely to protect the drive train, which is covered under warranty and clutches are not.
Has any one out there that installed an after market clutch been told by a dealer that there drive train was no longer under warranty?
I have a question about the aluminum flywheel. Did you gain any horsepower with the lighter flywheel?
Thanks again and I will give an update later this week.
