Default timing cover?

I pulled my crank seal to replace it with a new one and had no idea there is a lip cast into the timing cover hole where the seal is. Its on the back. Kind of like a stop for the seal, but with the seal installed flush with the front it doesn't need to be there as I see it. That being said, my seal puller grabbed it and broke it. The lip is only about .043" thick. On old school timing covers I don't ever remember there being a lip there. My question is should I replace timing cover or is the lip unecessary. If not needed I could simply grind it smooth.

thanks,
-V

V,

Can you take a digial photo of it to post? One thing I would be worried about is if there is a crack in the cover that will get worse with time. Your almost there now to replace it. If it were me, I would bite the bullet and put a new cover on rather then risk having to tear it down again.

Just my simple two cents...

Regards,

I will be taking the cover off tommorrow. I am positive there is no crack as the piece that broke off is paper thin and came off clean from the cover. It would have taken a lot more force to break the thicker part of the casting. I almost thought it was some kind of spirolock in front of the crank until I realized what happened.
thanks!

I forgot all about this. There indeed is a very small lip on the backside of the hole for the seal to sit against. I purchased a used cover and installed a new seal. Ran the motor and no leaks. Looking at both covers I doubt the lip is necessary for preventing oil leaks. If ever replacing the seal I discovered its best to remove the cover and tap the old seal out from the back. Its in there super tight and the chance is very good what happened to me is common if the seal is pried out from the front. One note I'd like to make is to leave the cover bolts a little loose until after installing the balancer. That will allow everything to find its place.
