Oil pan questions
Lost a battle with some small rocks and cracked(smashed) the oil pan. Questions; Can I change this in the driveway on j-stands?? Can I remove the pan with the headers still on the car?? Do I need to support the block/engine?? Any HELP welcomed Thanks, Guys! (the jack stands are under a 2x6 block system that spans the cradle as per forum suggestions.) Dave
notice that the links call for different procedures-one does NOT require the removal of the front cradle, the other one does.I'd definitly try the first one!!!!!!
If you have the bat-wing (2 piece) design it's a 30 minute job if you only trashed the lower piece. There are a couple bat-wing oil pans for sale on the buy & sell forums for $100-$150.
You will need to purchase a new gasket for the lower oil pan if you go this route, don't want to re-use an old gasket.

KCvetteowner; I'm learning this... hoping to find one that is two-piece...Most of what's out there seems to be older units. Thanks for the input Seriously hoping to just do the bottom section as that's all that's busted.Dave

All Corvettes 97-04 LS1/LS6 had the two-piece "bat-wing" style pans. There is an upper piece that attaches to the block and goes up over the front cradle and is a pita to remove. The lower cover has about 15 bolts and it comes right off.
If it is just the lower piece, and it is just basically a cover, its very simple. As long as you have room to get under and the Vette is stable enough to be safe. Other than good jack stands, nothing special is needed and nothing else needs to be removed.
Finding the lower piece maybe some work though. Good luck, I hope its only the lower pan!

Early LS1's had a one piece pan, I know this for sure as my bro's 99 FRC had a one piece pan.
The GM parts manual shows two-piece design 2000-2002 (my part manual only covers 97-2002.).
If it were me and I didn't have the two-piece design, I would switch over to it for this very problem you have. You aren't the first one to pierce the bottom of their oil pan and you won't be the last. 1 hour for a cover vs. several hours dropping the front cradle

Just do an ADVANCED search the other search should NEVER EVER be used. Search on OIL PAN WING and then ENTIRE POSTS and then go click on C5: GENERAL (right click the mouse and select more forums) add C5 TECH, C5 Z06 and C5 PARTS FOR SALE/WANTED. Then click search. Go back up to two weeks as these things don't move very fast.
