Buy an OBDII Scan tool (like Autotap). It will tell you if you have knock retard, how much, if you are running lean (shouldn't be if you are stock), if you are getting misfires (the only reason to change spark plugs, IMO), etc. It will be money well spent. Then, when you hit a brick wall like I did with this same problem, try doing Steven MH's PCV system mod. Cheap, easy, reversible, and it works!
Just finished replacing my puckless factory plugs with the NGK's and the factory wires are gone in place of the Magnecor's.
Took the car out for multiple runs from 0 to 100 and the detonation problem is now gone! I have yet to get the PCM reprogramming completed but now I am in no rush. Thank you all for yor assistance!

I changed the plugs fiirst and found some improvement. I also switched to Chevron gas which pretty much eliminated the detonation problem. I really don't understand why the knock sensors are not working. I feel no loss in power when the motor is detonating. If the sensors were doing there job, I would think I would feel some loss of power when the motor starts rattling.
"My 02 was built late in 2001 and I have pinging also. Is there an update possibly for my car also?"
If you E-mail me your VIN #,I can check for any updates...
Any one with a 2001 should have the updated calibration installed...It improves shift quality, addresses spark knock, and corrects the lack of power issue when downshifting...I have done a few,and the best I can describe is that the vehicle feels "crisp" under acceleration...The improved shift quality seems to prevent the trans from dumping into the wrong gear under hard acceleration, with any traces of spark knock gone...

Had the dealer perform the update but it is still pinging at WOT. I thought I would run this tank of fuel out and try fuel from a different station. I use BP gas, should be good.
