Just ordered oil pan/filter magnets from Mid America. The idea is to place them on both the filter and oil pan. I went downstairs to investigate the difficulty of installing same. Closer inspection suggests the oilpan on the C5 is aluminum. Am I correct in surmising the magnet will only work on the oil filter? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanx Rad
You are correct there. You can buy a magnetic drain plug for the pan, but I think having the magnets on the oil filter would work about the same. The only difference is that you wouldn't be able to see what the magnets capture.
A magnetic drain plug is your best bet. I have them in all my cars and find some very fine debris there each time I change the oil. I also put magnets on the oil filter, but doubt that it does much... figure it can't hurt. :D
The $3.00 drain plug that GM forgot! Think about it. Why wouldn't GM spend $1.00 more (their cost) to equip every $50,000 C5 with one if they are THAT effective? My brother-in-law put over 300,000 miles on his Toyota Van before selling it in perfect running condition (no oil-burning or smog-related problems). The unbelievable thing is that he NEVER installed a magnetic drain plug! I guess if he did, the engine might go more than 500,000 miles before having problems!
The fact is that with recommended oil and filter changes, your car will live longer than you do. THAT'S enough for me.

Well, GM does think they are effective enough to put them of some 500,000 Silverados, Sierras, Yukons, and Tahoes built since at least 1999. Yes, not only magnetic oil drain plugs, but a drain on the auto trans with a magnetic drain plug also. Now my question is: If they can afford it on a $20,000 base pickup truck, why not on a $50,000 sports car? Another thought: Why do the pickups get synthetic rear lube from the factory, when the C5 (with a known rear temp weakness) not get synthetic rear lube from the factory?
Ahh, but how many of those cars have aluminum engines and a D.I.C. that tells them when to change the oil based on driving habits and temperature conditions? Obviously if Toyota feels that their cars' engines don't need magnetic plugs, there's good reason to believe (based on the fact that those cars tend to be more reliable than any other on the planet) that they're not necessary.
Now as far as the way we drive our cars - how many of you have blown your enginesbecause you forgot to install a mag drain plug?

 True - True - BUT - If I hadnt had a Mag Plug - then I would have NEVER known that I had broken two rocker arms!! And we can speculate the possibilities of not knowing and say that the Mag Plug "prevented me from blowing my engine?"
Duno - thats why I said - just go buy one - as you never know when you pull that plug - what you may find attached to it..
I guess THAT happens all the time! Now what do you think would happen if that little magnet comes off the plug? I don't think I want to find out!
Ok this is getting silly.
But to answer your question; nothing would happen if the tip came off.. The oil filter would not allow the tip to pass through and go back into the engine.... So it is a mute point...
I put the GM magnetic drain plug in when I did my first oil change. Most dealers can not find the correct part number but I just happen to have it handy:
24100042 LS1
Also if you need one for a small or big block chevy here is the GM number:
23011420

My point exactly - as long as you keep using that oil filter.................!

Well, since the magnet is a magnet, and the plug is steel, even if the glue dissolved, the magnet would stay with the plug!!
PS The oil pump strainer has a smaller screen size than the magnet also.
No one claimed the magnet improved performance, so it certainly can't be seen as something one might install with exaggerated expectations. It can't hurt to install it; They are factory installed on several engines - Even those with aluminum cylinders.
With some of the snake oil "performance" products discussed on this forum, I am at a loss for words to describe how I feel about anyone who would discourage the use of the hundred-year-old technique of placing a magnet in the oilpan.
Actually, I am not at a loss for words. If you believe that there may ever be any particulate iron suspended in your engine oil, then the magnet is a good idea. The cost is reasonable - Less than a good quart of oil.
If you don't believe there is ever any particulate iron suspended in the oil, then omit the magnet and instead wisely choose to spend your money on a five dollar bolt-on performance part. Then you'll be qualified to tell everyone that your car does ten-second quarter mile times.

Actually, GM does put magnetic drain plugs in all 2002 Corvettes. The 2001 Corvettes might also have them from the factory, but I'm not 100% positive.
