Default Electric Shut down help needed

I have a 98 vette that moves about 10 feet then shuts down. One place said it was the security system to do with the key cylinder so they replaced that and it did not fix it. It will restart every time when you let it set a couple of minutes. There are no codes being set.

Thanks for any help in advance

Nelson

You car is shutting down because of a VATS Security issue. The resistor chip in your key isnt making proper contact and the BCM is killing fuel when it senses vehicle speed or movement.

The dealer ship was sort of correct but didnt fix the CORRECT part of the switch!

The small metal can (sensor) in FRONT of the ignition switch is where theresistor chip reading contacts are located. Either the resistor chip is bad, its the wrong value or theres a problem in that circuit.

Heres a pic of the sensor on the front of the ignition switch:

Put the key in the ignition switch. Unplug the wire from the harness under the dash and read the connector contacts from the sensor with an ohm meter. Record the value, Then figure out what resistance value your key resistor is suppose to be and see if they match. You can read the resistor pellet in the key with an ohm meter.

Bill,
Thank you for your reply. They supposedly replaced the whole ignition switch. Would you have the part number of all the items that I need. Sorry to be a pain.

Thanks again

I dont have that part number but,,,you can call Gene Culley ( www.gmpartshouse.com ) and see if he can get it for you. In the mean time,,,try your spare key and find out what resistance reading your key is. You can purchase a precision resistor of the same value from a local electronics store and insert that resistor in the car side of the electrical connector to eliminate that sensor. Thats a tempo fix if VATS resistance value is the issue.

Do you have any DTCs or messages in the DIC that might indicate that it a Column Lock Issue???? Do you have a Column Lock By-Pass module installed????
