99 convertible M6 - 186K miles - daily commuter - recently, I began to smell a slight odor of coolant when parking in my garage after my 50 mile commute. Not much - very slight odor. I opened the hood and inspected the engine. Hoses and clamps look good. No evidence of liquid anywhere. No drips under the car in the morning.
I have had this car since 22K miles. I don't know if the first owner replace the water pump but I would doubt it.
I don't want to get stranded.
Questions:
1. Is there a way to check the water pump (or other leak sources)?
2. At this mileage, should I pre-emptively replace the water pump (or any other coolant system parts) just to be safe?
3. Are there any other sources of coolant smell that I can check?
Check the overflow reservoir -- I had similar symptoms and later found pinhole leaks where the coolant was bubbling over from the reservoir. Replaced the reservoir and that fixed the problem.
I have the exact problem. 144k on my 97. Without a pressure tester, which would be a great way to tell if the coolant system has pin hole leaks, not sure what we could do. Outside of removing the reservoir and plugging up the outlet and fill it and see if it leaks???
