Hi
I recently bought HRE 547 3 piece split rims in chrome and chrome is comming off so i want to take them apart and sandblast them ,leave the dish in chrome along with bolt and spary the inside of wheels in light grey.
The question is ?
How to take them apart ? Will i need any seals or gaskets when I`ll be putting them back together ? Is it safe to take them apart ? Anyone have done it before ?
I don't know about HRE's, but I've rebuilt two CCW Classics myself due to potholes combined with front outer rims equals bent lip. From CCW you can buy the wheel components separately. Then by following their video instructions on their website, I was able to disassemble the wheels and reassemble them successfully. On their video you will see a fixture that lets them rotate the rim on the workbench while gluing and tightening. While theirs is made of metal, for a few bucks I was able to duplicate it out of wood from Home Depot. If you are going to repair your wheel yourself, you really want to make something like this. It makes the job quite a bit easier. Overall, it's not a hard job to do.
I don`t want to reanimate a dead body but it`s small update :
Today I tooka the wheels apart, I sparay painted 2 of them to see how other finishes would look like.
I tried pewter, silver, flat black and gloss black but i thing on my black car the chrome on chrome looks the best.
Here are some photos.
There are 35 bolts per wheel, they were not very tight. I`ll take the outer rim for machine polishing and the centre for glass bead blasting.
If You have any photos of black c5 or c6 with other colours of HRE 547`s I`d love to see them before i`ll make final decision.
