PS rack leaks- any recommendaitons other than replace?
Pulled into the parking lot at a store and noticed that a like of fluid had started about 5' behind my car and was headed right under it. A quick look under the hood indicates that the passenger-side inner PS boot is torn and leaking fluid everywhere.
Now, I suspect that boot is only to keep out grime and dirt, not to keep in fluid. Which leads me the belive there is a seal busted.
Any options other than R&R the rack? Anyone have a link to the directions?
I can't say I'm surprised- the car has hundreds of autocross and track sessions on sticky R-compound tires. And no Z51 PS cooler.
Check to see exactly where the leak is coming from. It could be a line leaking which would merely require replacing the line. It could be as simple as a loose fitting. If your luck is like mine, then it's a seal in the rack. If so, sorry to say but replacement is the only fix. Get a rebuilt rack from ZIP Corvette in Richmond, VA. They are a forum vendor and the have the cheapest price by a half. I've had mine in for 6 months now with no problems.
As for the pump, I wouldn't bother unless it was giving you problems. If you do need to replace it check with Gene Culley for the best price on an OEM replacement.
Before you install the rebuilt rack match it to the old rack. Make sure you don't turn to input shaft on the old rack while removing. Still you will need to get an alignment.
