Here's the short of it. Was getting on the highway, down shifted from 4th to 3rd. Just as I did and the RPM's shot up, an odd sound (only way I can think to describe it would be a POOF) and then NOTHING from the engine. I pulled over in the merge lane and car would not restart. Had it towed to a mechanic and he has yet to really take a good look at the car, however he did notice that the one accessory belt had ripped. It's not the main belt in front that drives everything, it's the belt behind that drives the AC compressor.
Would this belt ripping cause the engine to shut down? I can't believe it would, so is there anyting within the vicinity that would be destroyed by the belt ripping and cause the engine to shut down?
NO....I know it was 3rd gear...there was time to let the clutch out and get the RPM's up. Definitely not even close to putting it in 1st. Thanks for the help, I guess I'm trying to concentrate on finding out if the AC belt can wipe anything out...some sensor or what might be in that area.
Car would not restart or attempt to restart....starter was trying but nothing.

Retrieve and post the codes: Always a good place to start when diagnosing.
So you’re saying that you know for sure that the engine did NOT over rev past redline? (As it would if you shifted into first)
Don't get me started on this, but the mechanic was iffy about me reading codes....says he doesn't want to wear the battery out. I know, I know....
YES...I do know what shift to 1st would've been like. NO, I did not shift to 1st. There was a very short burst of acceleration before the engine quit. YES, I have hit the rev limiter before and NO I did not hit it this time.
I DID NOT SHIFT INTO 1ST. Whether I broke/bent a rod or any other catastophic failure happened....It wasn't because I shifted to 1st. I understand I might not have been clear that the RPM's went up when I down shifted, but it wasn't because I shifted to 1st.
We can hopefully get past that and focus on what the AC belt could've wiped out. THANKS.
Reading the codes wont wear the battery out. It literally takes a minute to do and could easily provide info to resolve the problem. Without pulling codes its all specualtion.
If you broke/bent a rod you would know it. There would be awful noises and "poof" isn't one of them.

Find a new mechanic if he's worried running the battery down on a car that won't start....

And that's why everyone keeps thinking you hit 1st, there is no rev limiter protection for this....

You said the belt was ripped. What does that mean? Still on the pulley, hanging, etc?
Unless the belt wrapped itself around some wire harness, who knows. Last time I was in a car that made a "poof" noise while acceleration, and shut down/no restart, it was a timing chain.
