Default very notch shifting

Hello,

I have a 97 mn6. The shifting in the car is very notchy, there is a piston assembly that the actual shift rod goes into that connects with the linkage.

Their is a little play in the bushings in this piece and in the linkage in general.

Could this be enough to cause notchy shifting, or am I probably experiencing the early systems of the notoriously week syncro's on the C5?

Car only has 31k on the clock and does not slip out of gear, but you really have to yank to get it all the way in gear.

Any ideas on this one would be greatly appreciated. Also anywhere to go to get GM part numbers on the web?

Thanks,

Greg

I had same issue, except it was popping out of gear. Ended up being bent shift fork, just glad for extended warranty.

Check out the anti-venom mod. Seen a recent thread with instructions.

You are most likely a candidate for a clutch fluid and tranny fluid change!! The clutch master uses brake fluid that absorbs water and looses it's effectiveness.Use a turkey baster to suck it out and replace it with fresh fluid,,drive it for a while and repeat. Then about twice a year ought to keep it clean and fresh. The tranny fluid is dexronIII (I used Royal Purple Syncromax, safe for the older trannies),,either should make a difference. Neither process is difficult and there is a VERY good chance this will improve your shifting!! The trans has both drain and fill plugs,,and takes about 4,41/2 qts. Give it a try,,you probably will be plesantly surprised!!

Tick master cylinder might also help your problem

Do the Anti Venom Mod first. You'll be surprised.

Guys, thanks for all the help. I changed the fluids, changed the detent, changed the bushing which required changing the whole shifter piston assembly.

Still notchy. I noticed that the car shifted great at high RPM's. I contacted Tony of Tony's Corvettes, he had seen this problem with other customers. Notorious wonderful synchro's on the C5.

After he diagnosed this over the phone, the car started slipping out of second two days later. I will be making the journey to DC to have Tony install a new RPM transmission and 3:90 in the rear, I figured why not since the rear end has to come out with the tranny anyways.

Thanks again,

Greg
