Default AC Head Unit Question

Have a 98 with the AC head unit display starting to go out. I have read up on fixing the solder points to bring it back to life. In the event the fix doesn't go well, I wanted to know if I can use a 2000-2004 head unit in a 98. Noticed the part numbers are different. Is the newer head unit designed better? Whats the difference between the 98-99 and 2000-2004 units?

I THINK there are a couple differences. When upgrading to an aftermarket head unit I know that there are different harnesses for the subwoofers. Something like: 97-00, 00-03, and 04. Different plug sizes. This should ONLY be for the subwoofers, though. As far as speakers, ignition control, etc, the OEM wiring harness fits 97-04.

Someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

He's asking about the AC head unit not the stereo head unit!

I am having the same problem as well. I have a '02 and aside from there being a manual A/C & dual zone A/C I'm not sure what the differences may be. I know that when I worked for a reconditioning facility when some of our vendors would change part components a new part number would accompany the new, whole unit although the fitment was the same. I have noticed a couple of used ones on ebay occasionally as well as services that can fix yours for a relatively low price. I'm not too good myself on fixing solder points otherwise I'd try myself.

For the 98 Dual Zone, you want Part number 09352181 ,which has been superseded by part number 16254311 but both will work with no problems.

02s use Part Number 09380441, which has been superseded by part number 10345293. Again either one works fine...

It's possible other models will work, I can't confirm that though.

If the only thing wrong with your HVAC is the Display or some burnt out bulbs and you aren't comfortable fixing it yourself, contact JW Motoring, a supporting vendor in here...

Thanks Tstar,

I noticed the unit for the 2000-04 is actually a few dollars cheaper then the 1998-99 unit at rock Auto. That's why I was asking if the part numbers were interchangeable. Since they are, I will buy the later part number part for my 98. (Only if i botch the solder repair that is !)

That's not what I meant to say, I gave two seperate statements for two different model years to answer VetteC5Z51 also.

09352181 or 16254311 WILL work fine in your 98. Like I said it is POSSIBLE that others will work also but I can't confirm that... I did read a few reports that the later model HVACs have "cured" some of the actuator doors getting out of synch with the older model C5s, but again I do not have any real evidence of that nor any long term reports.

Sorry about the confusion...
