Default magnaflow catalytic converters

I have 185,000 miles on my 01 Vette now and I may need to replace the catalytic converters. Code PO430 catalytic system low efficiency comes up when I poll the codes. I've been quoted $2100.00 installed for factory set. I see where Magnaflow has a set Model #93988 for $398.88. Is this system worth the trouble to order and have someone install or should I bite the bullet for factory cats? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
eelstx

Sure, the Magnaflows should be fine, and they are not very hard to install. Another even less-expensive option is to buy a used midpipe/cat section from a forum member. Lots of the guys here switch to headers and hi-flow cats, and sell the old midpipe/cats at very reasonable prices. Check the parts-for-sale section, maybe place a want-to-buy post. Any 2000-2004 will bolt right on your '01. the Z06 ones are best, cause they don't have the little pre-cats.

$2100 is way high. I also attempted to go with the Magnaflows, but they don't make one that fits a 99. (their site says they have one, but it does not) Been there done that. Any who... I had a reputable performance shop quote me $640 bucks to drop the exhaust, cut out old cats, weld in new ones that were California Smog Compliant and reinstall exhaust. Never followed through with it. I just installed some 02 sims. If I ever sell her, I'll replace the cats then.

btw - a factory mid-pipe w/cats is about $1K at the dealer (not installed).

another member just showed me this link:

$55 bucks a convertor. I couldn't rememeber if the stock cats were 3 or 2.5 inches. I think the inputs are three inch and the outputs are 2.5. If that's the case a 2.5 would work at shop a muffler shop that can weld stainless.

I have an '01 with 30k miles and my cats went bad two weeks ago (ratttling). The internal honeycomb came lose.

The dealer quoted $1,550 including $87 labor for OEM replacements. I researched and found Magnaflow high flow cats which I bought. I also bought the Magnaflow X-Pipe. These two pieces replace the one piece factory cats and H-pipe assembly.

You can get away with the cats only and have a shop cut the factory exhaust and weld the H-pipe to the Magnaflow cats. I figured by the time I paid them to do that and install it, I may as well upgrade the entire system to include the Magnaflow X-Pipe. Its all being installed tomorrow at my local Monro.

I shopped around and bought mine from AutoAnything.com. They had an offer going last week for $20 off every item over $200 so I saved $40 bucks on the package. Shipping was free and no sales tax. Cost for each piece were as follows:

Cats - $369.58
X-Pipe - $329.17
Total - $698.75
Est Labor - $90.00

I will re-post tommorrow after they are installed. I'm running this back to a Z06 Ti cat back.

UPDATE:

I went to have the new parts installed and the Magnaflow catalytic converter that I received is defective in that the two pipes don't line up with the exhaust manifolds correctly. I am working on exchanging for a new part and will advise when it is finally installed.

Whatever happened with this? I have read another thread where the Magnaflow didn't line up correctly. Wierd cause they always fit good on my 86 Mustang GT and 97 Cobra.
