Default Security light displaying on my dashboard. Sometimes. Help?

Can someone tell me why at times the word Security will be displayed while I am driving on my dash, while at other times its not visible? The car has passive unlock turned on, and everything seems to be working fine. Just sometimes the light is there, other time it is not.

Im confused. But I know someone on here has an answer.

Thanx - E

More then likely the VATs chip is loosing contact with the lock cylinder, you could have too much wieght on your keychain, the "pellet" could be dirty or your ignition could be worn down or dirty also...

These are the easy things you could check first anyway...

I agree. As Tim stated...pellet isn't being read by the ignition switch.

Thanx guys. I take it the pellet is the odd piece on the key? While you answer what it is that is that might be causing the problem (dirty pellet, weight issue) I still dont understand why the light is flashing at times. If the key isnt working, why did it start my car? Its not weight related... that im sure. Ill try cleaning my key. Any other suggestions? As I said, its not actually doing anything except blinking, im just curious as to why its intermediate.

If the pellet isn't dirty, then the contacts in the switch that connect the pellet to it are probably dirty or worn out. As it was mentioned already, it seems that people who have lots of junk on keychains, will wear it out a lot faster. Bill Curlee has a nice posting with pictures that will show this item. Even while driving, if the connection opens up, this will cause the security light to flash. While starting the car, if that light is flashing, its not going to turn over.

Now THATS what I was looking for. An explaination that define the root cause of the issue. One that I could understand anyways. I appreciate all the help given by the others, I just didnt really understand what was being said.

I dont have much weight on my key, but I just got the 10 year old car a month ago.

I had that very simular issue on my 98 coupe and it was a GROUND problem. Try removing and disassembling the ground connector on chassis grounds G-101 & G-102 You need to fully disassemble the connector vise just removing it from the ground stud. The pins inside the connector sometimes get green with corrosion. Those grounds are on the top of the frame directly aft of the headlight assemblies on a 10mm stud.

That might have well been in ancient Greek. I have no idea what that means. Hopefully my mechanic will. Im not mechanically inclined, Im just trying to find out why its doing this so I have an idea on what to fix.

So there is one on each side? And I need to check to see if they are green, and cording? If so can I just clean them off with a wire brush, or do I need to replace the part?

Default Iospropol alcohol on key pelet

I get this after my keys have been in my pocket for a few months.
Isopropol alcohol and a clean rag to clean the pellet have worked so far.
Other things are possible but try this FIRST>BIGHANK
