Default lower steering column removal

I was reinstalling the lower steering column linkage after installing headers and I noticed a sticker with a warning about not spinning the steering wheel with the linkage disengaged. I thought "uh oh, did I screw something up?" I couldn't find anything in the factory manual about this, but my manual is for a 2000 and I have a 99. Is there a limit how many times the wheel can go around or something? I didn't spin it intentionaly, but I'm sure it moved around while I was pulling the linkage out.

You'll know if there is a problem when you fire it up and get a code. I can't recall it right now as I would have to go dig it up. Has to do with the steering wheel angle position sensor being out of whack and/or damaged. Due to where it's located in/on the steering column, I think removal of the entire steering column is required for replacement.

If it only moved a little either left or right, probably no problem. It's usually when the wheel (and shaft) gets rotated a pretty good amount. Not sure how far it has to go before it sets a code. If you've got active handling it is more of an issue than if you don't.

it said it has something to do with the inflatable restraint.

Hmmm, have you fired it up or at least turned on the key yet?

no, I haven't fired it up yet. I haven't put the coil packs back on the engine yet because it makes it tougher to manuever on the driver side.

For now, you can still turn the key to "run" and check for codes. Once everything is completely assembled, I would of course check again, as some of the diagnostics may only run with the engine running. Codes will tell the story, if there are any.

The steering wheel position sensor is the issue.

Ok, if I know what your talkin about, its for the airbag system. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as you have the steering column locked (which it should be) I think your ok. BUT just to be safe, when you go to put the key in for the first time, I would do it from the passenger side....just incase and turn the wheel in both directions.

The problem is with the 'Clock Spring'. It is the connection from the steering column to the airbag. If the wheel is turned too far either way while disconnected from the rack the Clock spring will break.

The problem with the steering position sensor occurs if you don't get the steering wheel clocked properly to the rack when you reinstall the parts. Just make sure the wheels are straight and the steering wheel is straight and you should be alright on it.

thanks, the picture says it all. My steering wheel tends to center itself, so I'll just hook it up with the wheels centered up.

I'll use my stunt double or the punk neighbor kid to try it out the first time.
