Default Red Tint in Diff Fluid?!?!

Could have sworn I noticed a reddish tint in the spot of diff fluid on the garage floor. Is this possible?

I've heard of brownish, yellowish, or even blue for some years, but never red. I have a 2000.

Any explanation? Or do I need my eyes checked?

Dextron Maybe? I hope not though...you may want to change the fluid; it ony takes about 1.7 quarts. Are you the original owner, and has the fluid ever been changed?

Bought it 1 month ago. Was aware there was a leak when purchased. Knew it was a common failure and budgeted accordingly, but I was surprised when I took a closer look at the color of the drip spot.

I'll drain it out and refill it tomorrow just to be safe I suppose.

Well I answered my own question. Got it up in the air to change out the fluid and...

The diff isn't leaking! It's dexron coming from the rear of the trans. No wonder the previous owner said "it leaks but never gets low!"

Thanks for the help anyways guys.

Furiously,

Jack

i have this problem as well... the thing is after i bought my z06 i took it in to get my diff and tranny fluids drained and filled. the fluid in the leak was red (typical of dex) but it was the diff that was a little low on fluid and not the tranny. mine isn't a really big leak (class II at best).

Right. I pulled the fill plug to check and it poured out while the car was perfectly level, so it can't be leaking too bad. I'll keep an eye on it.
