Do I need a new flasher? My tailight does not work as a turn signal on the passenger side. The front flashes but very fast. The tailight performs all other functions: brake light, tail lamp, and even works when I hit the hazzard switch but no turn signal. I have replaced both bulbs and all other lights work properly. The service manual says that the flasher is part of the hazzard switch which is in the dash. If I need that replaced it is actually OK because a search on this forum found a bypasss for 60 bucks and 15 minutes of time. I just don't want to spend 60 bucks if it is not the cure. To me if the hazzards work then the switch should be good but I also know how the electrical on these cars operates. No rhyme or reason. Please advise.
.generally a flasher is designed to work with a certain electrical load on it as it is basically a bi-metal switch that responds to the amount of current going through it.I'm guessing that even though the hazards work fine there is probablly some circuitry built into the combo switch that compensates for all four corners flashing simultaneously as the load is doubled. When they flash very fast there is usually too much load on it example if towing a utility trailer when lights are plugged in f/trailer all signals flash v fast. unfortunately I cannot think of any clear cut answer, but here are some easy/no cost things to try, first there are two relays in the instrument panel fuse block located under the toe board in the passenger compartment #38 & #40 one is f/right daytime running lamp the other is f/left ;switch these relays if prob goes to other side relay is bad(these are tied into body cont. module)they help moniter turn signal voltage.I have a sneaky feeling this might be your problem. If okcheck rear socket w/digital volt meter at rear socket, probe contacts inside socket hook meter to GOOD independent ground if voltage present check ground inside socket make sure voltage is same .or test w/ohm meter if any irregularites here w/voltage check all plug in connectors between hz/turn switch and rear bulb pull apart connectors usually when bad will be green and corroded inside if ground is bad just tie in seperate ground wire and tap into frame just below tail lights there is a space in RR corner you can snake a wire down to frame.I doubt turn signal is bad but its possible but if all these don't fix your prob. i would replace the hz/turn switch. well I hope I was of some help good luck there is a charge for this advice ..kindly post what you found and what the fix was as to help other forum membersonce again good luck
I might have overlooked something. When I checked the turn signals the front flashed and not the rear. But with the signals off I just noticed that the front DRL on that side is not working. Could I be so lucky? When I find the solution I will post it here. Thanks for all who replied.

Both sockets on the harness appear to be a bit burnt and yes one of the filaments on the DRL bulb was bad. Does anybody have a part number for the harness that connects the four front bulbs?

This socket is a standard GM item, used from 1990-2003 Most parts stores should have in stock. The one I purchased was called a handypack. Item no. was HP4170. Just need to splice it in to the harness - a lot cheaper than buying the whole harness, and easier to install.
