First - let me say I've spent hours reading the CL threads and they have been a huge help.
The CL Recall 04006B work was performed on my 2002 coupe in Oct 2004. The 04006C work was never performed. I just had the column lock up on me for 45 minutes (2 days ago). The GM Owner center lists no active Recalls for my car. The Dealer just told me the same thing.
Anyone have any recent experience getting GM/the Dealer to perform the 04006C service? Or, am I better off just doing the ByPass thing? Thanks.
Just order a CLB from Corvettes of Houston (CF vendor) and youll be good to go. I Had both the B and C recalls done on my car and I still got stuck while at the track!!
If the dealer is willing to perform the last recall, I would go ahead and get them to remove the lockplate so at least the column cannot lock.
Then, you can either install the GM Harness K relay or an aftermarket CLB relay to send the required signal back to the BCM to keep from getting errors and possible fuel cutoff.
Dealer not willing to go beyond the stage of "no active recalls exist for your car". That means they will not perform the 04006C Recall work. I'll just to the CLB thing (hopefully before the next autoX in 9 days).
Just returned from the WSCC Convention in Vegas and had the column experience. I was
at the drag strip and after establishing a bracket time I experienced the column lock. I have been thru 2 recalls with GM. They removed the column lock pin so that the steering wheel would not lock on a 98 vette. Figured that it did not need the CLB but wrong!!!!!!
The car went into fuel shut-off mode and would not run when the accelerator was pushed. GM's band-aide did not do the job!!!!! tried re-booting the computer and tried a
different key but to no avail.
Had the car hauled to Fairway Chev. in Vegas and they installed a Corvettes Of Houston
CBL the following morning and got me on my way. "Great People At Fairway". So the moral to the story is buy the Corvettes of Houston"s CBL, install and be done with the
column lock problem as GM can't seem to fix it.
Ok, is there a way to tell if a CBL has been installed without tearing things apart? Does it do away with the servo motor sound by the column when turning the ignition switch?
My Vett is a 2000 Manual. It has had the K Harness recall, part number 89023816. Service records also states it has been reprogramed. Reading through the thread pinned in this forum I see the post about making a jumper from a pin 30 to 87. Is this jumper only used if installing one of the after market CLB?
Thanks, sorry for jumping onto this thread, but it got me thinking about this and wonder if I might still be at risk.
RanBurVette - I think that's that story I needed to hear. I'm looking forward to installing the CLB. Very interesting that you were able to get it done at a dealer. I guess some of them take a common sense approach to their work. Nice to hear it.
Eric D - good question. I think you have to pull the panel and see what kind of harness has been installed. Someone with experience will have the answer. (I don't know about the servo motor sound).
Thanks for the information and taking the time to respond. I should have stated in my first post that I do in fact hear the servo motor running when putting in or removing the key, but the column never locks (plate removed?). Knowing this, is the safe thing to do is install the CLB? If there was already one installed I'm guessing that I wouldn't be hearing the lock servo motor running during key install or removal, is that correct?
Torch Red. I was surprised that Dealer "Fairway Chev." installed the CLB. I made up my mind that I was going to install the Houston device before leaving Vegas and informed the dealer not to flash the computer as I had a dyno tune and it would be lost if they did not save it. The president of Nevada corvette club had the Houston Corvettes CLB that he had not installed in his vette and delivered it to the dealer for me. Everything worked great except for the original fuel shut-off problem. "I AM PROUD TO BE A VETTE OWNER"
ERIC D-Since the install of the Houston Corvette CLB there is no servo motor noise from the column. I can not say if the harness has been replaced but by installing the CLB the problem of the fuel shut-off was solved.

I would either install a CLB or have one in the glovebox along with a Torx T15 so that you can install it when the K harness, if its installed, or the actuator fails. Simply a matter of time until they do. Since your car is in the range of years known to potentially have issues with a CLB, (1997 - 2000) you may still get error messages with the CLB installed. If that happens you need to determine if the BCM has enabled the fuel shutoff. (try to drive the car with the messages in the DIC) If the car immediately stalls then your only choice will be to have a tuner set the fuel shutoff to 255.
Thanks!!! This answers the question. I'll put an order in tomorrow for a CLB. As far as the fuel shutoff, is this something that can be changed with a Tech II?
Wow. I didn't expect my question would generate this much attention. Thanks much for all the excellent information and advice. Sorry to see that this is still such a big issue for C5 owners.
My CLB is being installed today. I hope this will be the end of my story. (However, just to be sure, if I ever have my engine tuned, I will get the fuel shutoff value put up to 200+ MPH).
