Started with the #7 plug, since I heard it was supposed to be the hardest. Figured I'd try to get to it without removing the AIR tubes...wrong answer. Once I got the AIR stuff out of the way, I got it out of there fairly easily, but it was tight in there. All the rest of the wires and plugs came out without much trouble.
The wires on the drivers side were pretty brittle...the #7 pulled right out of the base when I barely tugged on it, and the #5 fell apart when I looked at it wrong. Plugs looked like utter hell. New plugs and wires went it no problem at all. This car idles and drives so much better now I can't believe it. Wish I had done this a long time ago. It even cured the pinging/detonation problem I was having, which was a big-time plus.
61,000 miles on an '01 Vert, 6 speed, for the record. I highly recommend taking the hour and a half or so for a first timer and replacing the plugs and wires. I used NGK TR5s and GMPP wires (the red ones). I'm super-happy with them.
I changed my plugs/wires the other evening and took all of 30 min. I too had to remove the air tube being. Start to finish, 30 minutes. I replaced the NGK's with AC Delco Iridium's.
On my 2002 Z28, very, very difficult job as the engine sits much further inward.
I bought mine new in 99 and changed plugs in 99 at 30,000 miles. Wires were in good shape. The car came with NGK's and plat. tips. 2 of the tiny tips were missing and I have to assume the weld failed and they went through the engine. At 75000 there is apparently no damage from the tip going through the engine.
Replaced my plugs and wires today, as well, on my 2000, 70,000 miles on my C-5. As reported by the others wires were in pretty bad shape and pulled apart on removal. Put in NGK TR55's and 8.5 MM MSD wires. There was a noticeable difference in the idle and acceleration.
I wasn't aware of anything but Delcos prior to 2001 but in 2001 there was a problem getting Delcos and some of our '01s came with Densos...mine has them as well...many had problems with the Delco platinum "pucks" falling off widening the gaps...since ours don't have the pucks we don't have that particular problem but I was curious...I've not replaced my plugs yet (no where near the mileage) and have a set of A/C Delco Platinum RapidFires I wanted to try...seems I'm the only one to have those plugs but...thanks for the response and post...

My 99 came with the NGKTR55IX and I assume the pucks you refer are the platnium on the electrode. I found 2 of these missing on the NGK,, which is why I was wondering what other plug was being used. It almost sounds like the OEM GM plug and NGK plug had the same problem.
When I use the NGK website and check for the C5 plug this is what I get. It doesn't match the OEM settings for part # or gap.
