I have bracket raced for over 20 years. I never ran a full tank. (I used a stick I made that I dipped into the fuel cell so I was sure to put the same amount of fuel in it before every round.) Unless you have a fuell cell, thats a lot of unnecessary wieght to add to your car. But if you have traction problems, you might want the extra weight over those rear tires. Most bracker racers want their cars to go faster and faster, it's all about concistency, but for some reason, you just want to go faster next time out to the track. Rule of thumb 100lbs = 1/10 of a second in the 1/4 mile. Gas isn't light!
We try to run with 1/4 tank. But it dosen't matter in bracket raceing if you have a Hyundai that runs the 1/4 in 17 seconds, or a 10 sec wrinkle wall slick monster. It is all about running your time runs (usually 2) before eliminations, and seeing what your car is running on this nite. (conditions change so the car changes) And dialing in the # you think you will run. Now there are all sorts of different strategies to use as well. If we are running a super fast car & we start first...as long as I have watched him run and his dial is a little less than what he has run before, we will dial a few 100's slower (keep a little in our pocket) and since he is catching us, slam on the brakes a few feet before the line hoping to send him through on a breakout. Get the book from Jegs or Summit "Guide to Bracket Racing" $19 and well worth it.
PS, My 15 year old daughter is currently tied for first in points at Sunshine Dragstrip in the vette...out of over 60 competetors :D
Congrats to you and your daughter. I can't wait till my daughter is ready to race:)
