Well my baby is 5 1/2 years old and it seems the battery is going. She turns over slower than normal.
--
I have looked on line and wanted to know suggestions on battery replacement.
--
Should I replace it myself? I am thinking yes. Is there anything I need to do before hand to protect the electical system?
--
What is the best battery for the money? I was looking at Optima's even though they seem a little pricey.
--
Suggestions!!
Brad, mine went out while still under warranty, so GM gave me another Delco. I was going to get an optima, they seem to be the best. I'm sure you will get the yellow top.

It is covered with Stainless steel, but will still need the yellow one!!

Is there any protection I need to do or just disconnet and replace?

Just as a precaution, make note of your radio station pre-sets and make sure you have your radio unlock code handy. The procedure for unlocking the radio is in your OM.
Disconnect the Negative cable first and when installing your new battery, re-connect the Negative cable last. Any clicking sounds, etc you hear when connecting/disconnecting is normal.
BTW, that price that Hinson is selling the Optima 34/78 for is very good and no, I don't get any commisssion from them.
I would recommend an AC Delco Professional. I just had to take a Red Top Optima back with in a year and replace it under warranty with a AC Delco. The Red Top's don't like to sit for long periods and once they are discharged they don't like to hold charge.
Another vote for the AC Delco 7 yr professional. It's got a 50 month free replacement and the rest of the 7 years are prorated. The best battery warranty in the business. I bought one for my 04 for $108
I just put one of these in my car. I replaced an Optima Red Top. I would not recommend an Optima if your car is not a DD. Red Tops don't recover well if they become fully discharged.
The 04's are a top post, the problems people had in the past with batteries leaking and ruining the computer below were from over tightened side post batteries that caused the case to became cracked and leak onto the computer below. New batteries have a better case plus yours is a top post not prone to the problem.
Don't worry you won't loose your radio station presets or other seat or mirror memory functions, just disconnect the old and put in the new.

Reason: added memory stuff
Since you do not have to worry about acid leakage, I would get the ACDelco Professional battery with 50 month free replacement warranty, and just change it yourself.
About the only thing you can do wrong is short out the terminals with a wrench, so disconnect the negative terminal first.

Bob Steele Chevy in MI is quoting $128.95 for the 6yr battery. Is there any other places in the area to get a better price? I would be willing to drive 20-30 miles if needed.

Best warranty out there (not prorated after 2 years or whatever). I work with a guy who used to work for Johnson Controls, an OEM battery maker. He said in lab testing, AC Delco beat the pants off everything consistently. They are well built.
AC Delco 7 yr professional. That was my pick 2 years ago. Total cost with labor to find out what the problem was came to $150. The shop had a jumper battery on a wheeled cart and hooked it to the cables and changed the battery with no disconnect of power.
Have no problems since.

My local dealer is also stating that the 6yr battery only has a 18 month 100% replacement and then is prorated.

Anywhere I can get the true facts on the gm batteries and take into the local dealer if possible.
Your dealer is trying to sell you one of the 60 series ac delco batteries, stay away from those. The AC Delco professional series 7yr batteries have a 50 month free replacement. Check out www.acdelco.com it is the best battery you can buy for your C5.
