I am having trouble keeping my lower front spoiler intact on my 99. Somehow it keeps getting broke. My local Chevrolet dealer says it must be on there for proper air flow to the radiator but I have read in one of my Corvette magazines that (other than looks)it has no function at speeds of less than 100 mph. I am thinking of taking it off completely. Any ideas?
The main reason for the front spoiler is to direct air into the radiator as well as keep air out from under the vehicle when traveling at higher speeds. Just as the rear of the vehicle was design to drop and curve under to keep high pressures on the rear end of the vehicle to keep weight on the rear tires. I would keep it as designed. You can purchase a set of front spoilers supports at Zip or Mid America that will hold the front spoiler ends to the vehicle better. Try this, when you pull into a parking lot, stop before you think your in far enough, it will save your spoilers. Good luck.
I read that same response in the magazine. I think it might have been the Tech Nerd in Corvette magazine. The guy's an idiot, I've read many incorrect responses in his column. He should just direct his readers to the forum, you can get much better answers here.
Anyway, don't remove the spoiler, it is there for a reason. It directs air to the radiator at all speeds. You need it to keep cool. If GM could save a couple of dollars per car if they left it off, do you think they would put it on for the hell of it? It also helps with aerodynamics by keeping air from going under the car.
OK thanks for all of the info and yes it was in the Corvette magazine where I read this. The one I had on was from Mid America. Maybe it was defective so I will go ahead and try another one. It was the center piece that broke. I already have the end piece support on them.
Some guys who lower their cars quite a bit will often take about a 1/2 inch off of the bottom with a band saw for clearance...Just a suggestion. Mine isn't that low, so I scrape, but haven't had anything break.
If you don't drive too fast and you don't live in a very hot area you don't need it. I drove around for a while this spring without the center piece. I have also cut 1" off of mine.
