Both the C5r and the C6R were FRONT breathes. Double air intakes, one on each side of the front screens into the double Kinsler IR intake on top of the engine.
The Splitters kept any and just about all air from going underneath the race car.
I couldn't agree more...Gordy's information is not accurate. Can you imagine what would happen if they were bottom breathers and air got under the car?
I have an issue with my Vararam (I upgraded my B1 to the B2 kit) in that my MAF becomes dirty from the poor filtering, leading to hesitation in throttle response.
If I pull the MAF and spray it down with MAF cleaner, the car runs great-throttle response is improved- and my mpg actually increases (by 3-4 mpgs...so its significant!). I too have noted the gaps between the filter and the plastic intake box. I plan on pulling all of it in a few weeks (if I can ever find the time) and siliconing the thing so no more unfiltered air will get by.
Everyone is talking about the ram air effect, but I would wager (as has been stated by others) that the the main benefit is cooler ambient air.
Also, while there may not be an actual 'ram-air' effect, I'm pretty certain that the Vararam does reduce vacuum in the airbridge relative to stock and most other cold air intakes.
It's a shame Vararam can't make the intake out of a more plyable plastic that could bend slightly to allow better fitment with the varying tolerances with which our cars were made.
