Default M6 reverse help...please

I have a problem with my shifter popping out of reverse and also grinding when trying to put into reverse. This is the only gear I'm having any issues with what so ever.

This starting happening right after a certain screw up on my part. I was down in La on a long straight road, no traffic, and decided to let her breathe a bit. I got a little excited and when I went to shift into 5th I hit reverse instead. I pushed it hard a couple of times before I realized what I was doing and corrected my mistake. I didn't think much of it until I couldn't get it into reverse without the grinding. I talked to RPM Transmission about some parts and they pretty much told me that if reverse was having issues it was just a matter of time before other gears started having issues. They didn't say I needed a rebuild, but recommended that it be looked at to make sure there was nothing else going on.

All that being said......do yall think I can get away with changing the reverse gear, blocking ring and shifter fork caps?

Second, I thought this car had a reverse lock-out and wouldn't allow the car to be shifted into reverse while moving forward. If so, is this a problem?

It's a 2001 coupe.

Thanks a million for any advice given,
Wade

Wade,

Your car does have a reverse lock-out. What I think might have happen, by trying to push it into reverse as you did you mucked up the sifter to transmission adjustment. If it were mine the first thing I would try would be to redo the shifter alignment and see if this corrects the issue.

I had a like problem with reverse. I switched to the 2008 C6 ZO6 shifter. Problem was gone. I don’t believe now that the shifter fixed it, I believe readjusting the shifter to trans actually fix it.

Sounds like you mucked up the blocker since it's only poping out in the one gear. Either live with it or R&R the tranny. If you're going that far you might as well take care of the rest of the tranny weak links too.

Steel forks, bronze fork pads and metal syncro keys. Long as you're not making big HP no need to go crazy and spend a lot of money.

The RPM guys told me they could swap tranny's with me for $2000 shipped and it would have all the upgrades. Is that something you would recommend or is it something I could do myself. I have a buddy that could help me that knows more about such things. Thanks again.

I have an RPM Stage 5 Tranny with the works and the 9310 mainshaft myself.

I don't know what power level you're at, so it's hard to say what to do ?

Then fix it yourself or buy a used one cheap and sell yours as a core for somebody else.

You can probably get a used one for $700 - $1,200 dollars depending on the condition and mileage.

Why would you pull and replace a transmission when the problem is most likely just the shifter adjustment?

I doubt it is the shifter linkage since it's only happening in reverse. The OP stated that he jammed the shifter into reverse while going forward which probably damaged the revearse blocker rings.

If he was having trouble with any other gears I would agree with you that the shifter might be out of adjustment.

If you were having this issue...what would you fix? Please be specific.

Thanks again,
Wade

I'm guessing you bent the fork or screwed up the syncro based on what you said occured and the problem after-wards.

Send me your email address and I'll send you a PDF file.
