Quick A/C Question
1) Put gauges on it and verify the pressure on the low side at a minimum. If it is less than 28#'s you have lost all the freon. If you have more than 28# you have enough freon to activate the compressor do voltage checks at the compressor. If no voltage problem solve the voltage issue. It is possible to have no voltage and a defective low pressure switch.
2) If you have no freon you will have to look for a leak.
a) Look for oil leakage
b) Add freon (the pressure in the can is enough to activate the low pressure switch). Then check for leaks. If it is large enough you might hear it.
3) If you can't do 1 or 2 you will have to take it to a shop to have someone check it for you.
If your compressor is low on oil where did the oil go? You should see the leak. Be sure to check the evap drain under the car for oil. If your evap has failied oil might drip out from the drain tube.
Opening the system and changing parts would be a luck shot to find the problem with out doing the checks first. However if you plan to remove all a/c parts and reinstall all new a/c parts then don't waste time looking for leaks just install the new a/c.
