Default Temperature Gauge Problem

Experiencing a gauge problem. When I start my 2004 Corvette, all gauges jump to the maximum, then drop to normal. This afternoon, my temperature gauge did this, then rose immediately to the 260 mark and stayed there. It does this every time I start the engine. I'm showing a P0116 10-PCM code when I check the codes, and the DIC is showing XXX for the coolant temperature. Any thoughts as to the problem? Oil temperature is normal (about 220 degrees today), and the engine is not overheating.
I don't know if this is related, but I first noticed this a few minutes after installing a new battery. The old one was fine, but going on 6 years, so I thought it was about time for a new one.
Can someone please help? I'm a bit panicky right now!

Hi there ricwb!

This will be of little help but, perhaps, we can help each other going forward.............I practically have an identical story with my 2004 Cp...................Right down to adding the new battery and being a bit panicky! I'm searching for an answer as I assume you are...........Whoever get's it first should let the other know please...............OK!?!?!?

Thanks,
Bob

First thing that I would do is clear ALL the DTCs and see if that eliminates the issue.

Next, examine the temp sensor connector and make sure that all the wiring and the connector is in good shape. Make sure that the sensor its self is clean and in good shape.

You can also measure the sensor with an ohm meter to see if it is tracking properly with the increase in coolant temp.

The sensor is on the drivers side head under the alternator and forward of #1 sparkplug.

If all this fails,,replace the sensor.

You might not wish to drive it while that particular sensor is messing up on you. It controls a lot of things having to do with the fuel mixture and so on.

had the same problem with my 99. I knew it was not overheating and the temp gauge started going up and down back to where I thought the coolant temp was, all the sudden like 2 minutes after start up. Checked the coolant temp sensor and found some coolant leaking out from the sensor itself, probably messing with the signal. replaced the sensor and had no problems for about a year, then just yesterday had the same problem again, then it stopped, no codes set. Drove it for about 1.5 hours after that with no issue. checked the connector again and looked ok. maybe an electrical ghost?

Let me know what you guys find. Hopefully my experience sheds light on the issue

Bill I posted in your sticky Tech thread regarding my issues with coolant temp gauge and RPM/ idle. I guess I will try replacing the sensor even though I just replaced it a year ago.

Yes they helped and I appreciate them. I will try the little trick about unplugging the sensor wire when it begins to act funny. I am a military man so like to have a plan A, B and C lined up when I go into battle. Thanks for your help.
