Hi guys,
A few days ago I started getting a misfire in my 98 (243 heads, mild cam, BBK intake mani + TB, CAI, exhaust) and after posting in the scan and tune section and doing some research I've come up with a few questions.
I bought the car with 7 MSD coil packs and 1 pack that I am assuming is stock. From what I've read, it appears the MSD coil packs aren't that great Is there a way I could figure out if all my packs are working right? Also, is there a possibility that because I have 7 of one kind and 1 of another it could be hurting something?
My car does have new headers, and only 2 of the plug wires have the little protective heat socks on them. Since my car only seems to misfire after it has warmed up, could that be due to not having heat socks on the rest of the plug wires?
After I get the misfire situation taken care of and I get my car running right would it be okay to use header wrap on my headers to keep the heat by my plug wires under control?
Header wrap is a good idea, also helps keep underhood temps down. I'd definately check the wires for arcing and then the coil packs. Looks like one already quit previously. Listen for a snapping sound from the spark arcing while it is running, sometimes you get lucky. I'm not sure if this is OK to do on the very tempermental Vette, but on other cars I have pulled the plug off an injector, coil pack, or plug while it is running to figure out which one is dead. Then when I've found the offending one, I switch the coil pack or injector with a known working cylinder and retest the two by the same means ruling out either the coil pack or injector. Don't try it though until you find out if it is OK to do without freaking out the computer. You could probably pull a plug wire off but risk getting zapped without hurting anything. Also if you pull your codes it will likely tell you which bank has the misfire so you know where to start. If you have an inductive timing light you can clip it on each wire while it is running to check for spark, and the most basic old school trick is to use a water gun or spray bottle and spray each exhaust tube when it is running and warm to see if one cylinder is not as hot.
