Working on a friends 02 coupe. The column lock is engaged and won't disengage even if I power the orange and purple wire at the base of the column. I will be installing aftermarket by-pass module but don't know what to do with the pin that is in lock position. Any ideas???????
With a CLB at the ready slam the steering wheel back and forth from side to side (left to right) then turn the ignition key to “ON”. If the pin retracts, do NOT turn the key back to “Off” – leave the key in the “ON” position and install the CLB per the instructions that come with the CLB.
It may take several attempts for the wheel to unlock.
If the wheel won’t unlock, you must remove the “lock plate” under the steering wheel or remove the locking motor itself, then install the CLB.
Or – tow it to the dealer for column unlocking. If you do take it to the dealer insist that the ‘Lock Plate” be removed so that with or without the motor it can never lock again. The dealer most likely will want to replace the expensive column lock motor assembly so that the column locks – especially on a stick shift car. Your car – your choice.
My advice -
1. Remove the lock plate (or at very least take the locking pin out of the equation by disconnecting the motor with the pin retracted)
2. Install the CLB
3. Use HP Tuners or EFI Live to raise the fuel cutoff speed to 255MPH.
The lock plate is off and the rest of the column is disassembled. I think the recall has the updated locking plate that does not engage the locking pin. I would be better off just removing the locking motor assembly.

You can replace the lockplate with the smaller version used on the automatics, or you can just grind down the existing lockplate so that it cannot engage the pin. There are pictures here... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ing-wheel.html
You need a replacement plate to cancel the turn signal and serve as a spacer.

I was going to remove the locking motor but I think grinding down the locking plate would be easier! Also, I need to get an auto locking plate to see if it is in fact smaller than manual. Thanks!!!!!

The one used on the automatics is definitely smaller. The smaller plate comes with the GM harness K kit, and the link I gave you shows the outline of the smaller plate drawn on the plate that comes in the manual cars.
Look at the 3rd picture down with the plate on the column, and you can see he has drawn the outline of the smaller plate in black marker.
