Default Overheat Advice

Ok... so I was driving my car rather "spirit-edly" and I threw the belt. Before I knew what happened my car hit the redline on the temp and I shut it down immediately. It only hit the "check gauges" "overheat" a few seconds before I turned it off. I opened the hood to let it cool naturaly, and waited to put a new belt on until it was totally cool.

So.... I'm scared..... do you think I could have blown a head gasket? Warped a head? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Just trying to ease my mind, or check something if I need to. I haven't driven the car since.... all advice and opinions would be greatly apprectiated.

You should be fine .

Check your oil and look for bubbles when the motor is cool .

bubbles = head gasket , no bubbles , no worries .

You won't know till you start it up and find out. Chances are pretty good that you'll be Ok but as stated above, do what zoomz suggested. You were wise to shut it down and let it cool off totally. The larger issue is what caused the belt to come off in the first place? Worn belt or is the harmonic balancer wobbling?

I've overheated the living crap on so many cars (exept the vette, for the time being) without doing major damage. I literally overheated one of my winter beaters at least 30 times, with no apparent damage. I'm sure every engine design reacts differently to overheating, but I'm confident u r ok.

You should be fine. Just drive it and do a good assessment on how it feels and sounds and clear all the DTCs and monitor for any new ones.

I agree,,,,,why did a serpentine belt pop off??? Something is NOT RIGHT! Carefully inspect the harmonic damper and make sure that the ring is NOT walking forward or aft and the rubber between the hub and outer ring is not pushed out. Ive shifted at 7000 rpm and NEVER EVER had a belt issue! You have a problem. You just need to figure out what it is.

Thanks y'all! I have put a new belt on and have refilled the coolant, among other repairs. It seems to have no issues what-so-ever. As far as the belt goes, I was aware that the belt was due for replacement, as it was dry and cracked. (stupid on my part for waiting) The belt apparantly seperated and destroyed my hoodliner and cut a couple of wires... but that's all a cheap fix compared to what could have happened.
