Went on a road trip this past week and when I stopped for gas I noticed a strange noise coming from behind the driver's seat (I think).
Noise sounds like the high pitched while a small electric motor makes. It sounds almost exactly like the bilge pump in my boat. Once I filled the tank I didn’t notice the noise as obviously.
The sound changes pitch when I tap the brakes or turn on any electrical device. It even fluctuates in pitch when the blinkers are on but only makes the noise when the motor is running.
Its the fuel pump. As they age, the sound changes, but unless you have a loss of fuel pressure, I wouldn't worry about it. To be sure, put a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail and measure it.
