Guys, when I am driving and my fuel gage sits with 1/4 tank still in the gas all of a sudden the gage drops to the red line and the "Check Gage" light comes on and "Low Fuel" shows up.
Why doesn't my reserve fuel come on anymore, or why am I dropping from 1/4 of a tank to empty like that.
I thought it had something to do with my right turn signal bulb in front of the car that went out. I replaced that over the weekend and my blinker works fine now. But now this.
I have a 2001 convertible that started doing the same thing at 1/2 full. You have 2 saddle tanks - 1 under / behind each car seat (not inside the car) and fuel is pumped out of the left (drivers) tank into the right (passenger's) tank and then on to the fuel rails for burning. There are several fuel sensors, wiring harness and fuel transfer pump that feed and monitor all this. GM has thoughtfully arranged to make you and I fix our $60,000 toy because they are playing the numbers game - cheaper to see who complains under warranty than to actually fix something at the factory at a X$/unit cost.
I had mine fixed today, under warranty. The dealer charged GM $417 for the work and it took them 2 hours. Guess we'd pay somewhere around the same if no warranty. Everything seems fine now. They replaced the right side tank's sending sensor. Dealer advised this is a common problem for all C5 vettes and that they fix 2 to 3 per month on average.
Just got mine back from the dealer tonight for the second time to fix this problem. Apparently beside changing the Fuel Sensor Assembly, they also have to Flash (update) the cars computer.

If any one is curious, the dealer gets reimbursed $50 per warranty labor hour from GM.Replacing the fuel sender pays 1.4 labor hours under warranty, and a small percentage on warranty parts (GM supplies the part). In other words, the dealer grossed about $90 on the warranty repair, with a net profit of about $60 after paying the tech ;)
The dealer didnt charge GM $417 to do the repair,GM paid the dealer $60 to fix thier screw up ;)
Thanks for the input. I am actually taking some printouts to show the dealer guy what I am talking about. The Vette guy at my dealer seems real cool. He only works on Vettes there and I met him he day I bought my Vette and he was real nice and told me if I have any trouble to bring it him.
I have a small list for them to fix.
Emergency Brake
Fuel Sensor
Windshield weather stripping is loose.
Better to get it in one shot then go back a couple of times. Oh and see if they have fixed the column lock on my car in the past. I bought it used a 2000 so I don't know if it was ever done.
All I know is that I read all of the paperwork for my warranty repair - including the paperwork with parts and labor charges that you, the owner, do not get copied on - and it totalled $417. The parts were $137. Do the math.
If this is a 2001 check you DIC Code.
Fuel Gauge drops to empty, DIC Code P1431H. Updated PCM recalibration to eliminate a false code 1431 (just released for 2001).
If 2000 you may need to have the fuel sender looked at.
