I am looking into purchasing a set of heads, most likely stage 2. From the prices I see, a set cost around $2,500. If I have to return my heads or face a core charge tacked on to the price of the new heads, is there really $2,500 worth of work on the new heads. I would think that a CNC machine could do the work in no time. What gives?
Morgan Motorsports sells them for $1850 and I think Cartek had them on sell for $1850 for a while they may still be but I'm not sure. I think Katech has the lowest core charges if you want to keep your stock heads. I agree even $1850 seems too high compared to what it would cost to port heads for other cars. It isn't like we have a DOHC engine or anything maybe a tuner can explain why it is so expensinve.
Check with West Coast Cylinder Heads. Talk to Richard. He has a great CNC program for the 5.3 LS1 type heads. Higher compression with the same port. Awsome flowing heads at a good price. He did my heads (LS1)and is doing another set for me (5.3) right now. He does a lot of NASCAR stuff and is really good. He did a set of Brodix big block heads for me a few years back and we made 730 HP! He is in Reseda Ca. at 818 705 5454

I would suggest going with a vendor that finishes the heads with hand porting as opposed to a total CNC process (though using CNC to rough out the heads is okay and actually a good time-management strategy).
We offer a set of stage II heads for 1995, and quite a few other vendors on this board have competativley priced packages.
Just take a look at the parts you are getting, etc. For a set of 2500 dollar heads I would expect bronze valve guides, new seats to accomidate larger valves (probably 2.055 intake), etc. You do not need these parts per se, but they are just another upgrade you can do if you desire. Just relize that a stage II from vendor to vendor isn't completely consistent in the parts used, work done, etc.
