Default heat guage

I have a 97 C5 and the temp. guage is going crazy. When I drive the car the temp. on occasion will jump to 260 then drop back down to 220. Sometimes you can drive it for an hour or two before it does this and other times 10 minutes. The car never seems to be really overheating. the guage just goes up and down. Also, on occasion the fuel guage will jump from full to empty then back to full.

Has anyone had this problem? If so what was required to fix the problem?

Thanks

Chances are the two are not related. The coolant temp issue is most likely the sensor or associated wiring. Voltage and ground for this sensor comes directly from the PCM. The fuel gauge issue is a common problem. Some have had luck running techron to resolve it.

It wouldn't hurt to regularly check your radiator/condenser for evidence of debris that might be blocking the air flow...

Run some Techron for the fuel gauge issue and check your coolant level too.
