Default Broken Tranny, need advice

Ok, here's my problem I was doing some hard shifting sunday night and suddenly my tranny wouldn't let me into second. I take it home and let it cool off then use the "ranger method" to change the fluid. Now it will let me into second but it keeps popping out. I used to take off from second now i have to hold it in 2nd or it pops out. I talked to my tuner yesterday and he says i damaged some parts in the tranny and it's going to have to come out,he recommends rebuilding it and if i pull it the labor on the rebuild will cost me around 1000.00 with parts.

I'm wondering should i just look for a low mileage mn12 from a z06 to replace or go for the rebuild? My question,is the mn12 stronger than the mn6? I know the gearing is different but will it handle more torque and hp? Does anyone know the rating? I've also heard some people say they sent their tranny's off to TICK for an upgrade, anyone have experience with them? I've seen mn12's selling on the forum from 750.00-1000$.

I have heads/cam and other bolt-ons and my car is aking about 430 at the wheels. I'm planning on pulling the tranny myself and replacing the clutch as well.

Any advice will be appreciated

The MN12 is supposed to have better/stronger internals compared to a M6. None of them are invincible. I used to shift hard till i realized how much $$ it cost me on rebuilds. I shift "fast" but i don t Powershift anymore. $1400+(that s what it cost me) for parts aren t worth the 1/10 faster powershifting will give u-imho.

I see way more M12 failures then M6's.

The differences between the M12 and MM6 tranny's depend on the year. Rodney from RPM transmissions posted this some time back:

01-up have compressed carbon blocking rings
03-up have steel 3-4 shift fork
04-up have a case to tail housing gasket (replaces silicone)
05-up have lead teeth on the engagement teeth of the 1-2 and 3-4 sliders and shifter rail bearings replace bushings. New design side to side detent mechanism
06-up have compressed carbon reverse blocking ring, 30 spline mainshaft on Z06's, redesigned tailhousing to differential mounting flange
07 -up have redesigned 5-6 and reverse mechanism
08-up New transmission design TR-6060

Now there are different ratios avaliable from 01-up and 05-up Z51 and Z06 have a intergal transmission cooler pump.

End quote. As you can see there are a lot of variables but the short answer is a M12 may or may not be stronger than a MM6 depending on the year.

No better advice can be given on the subject then the above. Learn to shift smooth and accurate and you will be far quicker and precise then powering it. It took me two rebuilds to totally buy into the theory. Learn or pay the price. Speaking form experience.

Good Luck

Where can you find a diagram, like the exploded view of an 02 tranny?
