So I was backing out my 97 c5 out of the garage and the steering wheel locked up and now it says on the DCI to service the Column lock system. I went to the dealer they said it is not under the recall or even the bulletins to be fix free of charge. I was just wondering what you guys recommend do I bother to bring it to the dealer? or do I by a CLB? will the CLB disengage my already locked steering wheel or is it to late I have to bring it to the dealer? I disconnected the battery nothing work pulled fuses 25,29 still nothing? what do you guys recommend thanks.
I had the dealer do it. They charged me $500. I argued but could not resolve it. I ended up spending many hrs on phone bitching with Chevy customer service and 2 months later they sent me a check back for $500.
I tried jerking the wheel hard to get it released. I find it unreal that GM will not stand behind there product well on the other hand it doesnt surprise me thats why they are bankrupt. If I have gm do the work I should have them remove the pin so that the column never locks up again right?
What are the odds... I was just backing out of the garage too and mine locked up..haha. I had the recall done back a few years ago. My local chevy dealer said replace the battery...low voltage can do it. So I'm heading out to buy a new one...
Spent $101 on a new AC Delco battery... didnt do crap... but while being frustrated shutting the car off and on... I turned my AC off then started again....worked... I think the AC was drawing too many amps.

If you can still hear your actuator cycle when you turn the key, try disconnecting the Harness K relay and reconnecting the column lock actuator. If that fails, install the aftermarket CLB.
Well you know GM did build some C5's with a special RPO code that prevents the Column Lock failure from occurring anywhere but in the owners driveway. Post your VIN and we can look it up for you but the fact that it has only occurred in your driveway pretty much cinches it. You got one with that special RPO.
Ha! Ha! That's exactly what happened to me, twice! First time was on the first day back from an 800 mile trip.
Are you kidding me? That sounds ridiculous. How would the car know it's parked in your garage and not somewhere else?????
Who said that it did? I just know I was damn lucky to be in my garage, and not the summit between Palm Springs and Blythe, when it happened. Do you think my car was worried about getting me home??
