Default charge system fault

Title says it all .That is the message that came up on start up over a period of maybe like a few days and went away.
It really pissed me off because I was going away on a trip and I had it loaded with crap and I mean loaded and I see this message.
I rolled the dice and went because it went out,the car started & ran fine, and charge showed 14.1 volts but I hated not knowing what chance I may have had being stranded [a battery I could handle] with some crap I would have had to been towed ruined vacation etc.
I,m back home 750 miles probably 30 + start ups no codes ,no messages. What the Hell?

I get the same thing every once in a blue moon. I just clear it sinceI have replaced the battery in the last year. It might be a ground problem.

Its a pretty common C5 message. As long as it goes OUT after the a short period, your fine. If it remains on or comes on during normal operation, you would then have an issue.

You can measure the output of the alternator at the battery and at the BATT terminal on the back of the alternator (connection under the rubber boot) The two voltages should be very close to each other.

Also what are the voltages readings on the gage and DIC. check them during the FAULT Meaasge.

Another message that your likley to see is ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM WARMING UP. That is also common and very normal.

Both messages deal with start up test that the PCM and EBTCM runs at startup.

If it happens again I will try and remember to look at amp. gage if I tried to look at DIC reading message would probably dissappear if it keeps the same scenario
Now that I am back on home turf I don,t give too much a rat,s azz what it says but I hated the sword hanging over my head on vac.
I at least wanted to get there and I wanted to drive the Vette 28+ mpg , fun ,etc
Thanks for all that respond

Its only a VOLT Meter in the IPC. Man,,,I wish we had an an in dash AMP Meter to monitor.

Like I stated previously, you fine unless it stays on. Its more of a PCM/ALTERNATOR Logic issue rather than a problem. The PCM expects to see the alternator charging before the alternator is actually charging. Were talking about milliseconds of a difference. Once the correct conditions are met, the light /message goes away.

Thanks again I see what you are saying but people like me who want a black or white have a big prob. with gray
You know I think it,s weird when like on my truck I don,t fasten the seat belt and the alarm starts at vastly different times and I,m thinking
what you [the car ] are supposed to be fast in your comps.like air bags ,anti lock brakes etc. and with this you get like me absent minded it does,nt make sense
