There was a good write up on this about 3 or 4 months ago. I believe it was posted by Junkman, detailed and w/ photos. Good luck.

This is Junkman's writeup

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...e-junkman.html

But he only covers the shaft seal replacement and not the cover seal. It's pretty straightforward though. From what I've been told, the hardest part is getting that tranny stud off by double nutting it. Other than that it's just ...

cover bolts off
pop cover off
remove old o-ring
put on new o-ring
seal outboard side of o-ring with loctite 518 or equivalent
reassemble, and let it set overnight before filling

There's this writeup too, but he drops the cradle which really isn't necessary.

If you look at the second writeup, what he does is first pack the o-ring groove with gasket maker, then slips the o-ring, then spreads a bit more gasket maker on the outboard side of the flange which the o-ring is on. I believe that is the GM recommended procedure.

GM states to put sealer on outside of cover o ring groove. Do not apply sealer to the o ring.

I know that's what was stated in the original service manual, but there's an updated TSB issued regarding how to seal the cover. Timemender was kind enough to post it for me when I had my own leaky butt questions.

Rear Axle Side Cover Oil Leak - fluid leak seal repair #PI01363 - (Sep 12, 2003)
Rear Axle Side Cover Oil Leak

Condition/Concern:
The rear axle side covers may exhibit a fluid leak.

Recommendation/Instructions:
When installing the rear axle side cover(s) a new o-ring and axle seal should be installed and a material such as Loctite® 518 should be applied to the outboard side of the o-ring.

The sealant should be allowed to set prior to filling the axle with oil and driving.

Part Numbers (Correct as of 9/2/03)

Side Cover O-Ring Seal - 89047953
Axle Seal - 88996703
Loctite 518 - 22423 Flange Sealant 25 ml with primer, 22424 Flange Sealant 300 ml with primer

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step.

Models:
(97, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04 Chevrolet Corvette)

There's a GM equivalent, but they probably price it similar to solid gold. I had to order the 518 from summit. Advance and Vatozone don't carry it.
