Anyone have any schematics that show the dimensions of the HUD? I was thinking of trying to retrofit a screen in there to make a custom HUD. I wasn't sure how much space I actually had and I haven't gotten a chance to take the dash out yet to fully look though.
Has anyone attempted to play with the HUD and put something else in there?
Maybe put a video projector in there to play what is in the in dash DVD player. Turn down the HUD and watch movies while you drive. Less distracting than looking over to the dash while on the freeway. It would be a safety feature. "Taledega Nights" while on a HPDE track?
Some projectors will play in reverse for use in rear projection systems.
Or use a video projector as a conduit to show whatever data you want from a computer like to toggle on a screen of a navigation software to the windshield? That may be handy, pull it up when you want to look for directions for a minute?
Could mount the projector next to the HUD so they both could be up?

Well, the reason I want to try it is mainly to integrate gps information onto the windshield. A few years ago I did a small project for the DARPA Grand Challenge where I wrote an imaging engine that could take images and figure out where the road is and what obstacles are in the way. I was thinking I could rewrite that and hook it into some kind of GPS system to really point out the roads and stuff. Really the possibilities are endless.. I'm just trying to figure out what kind of projection system would make the most sense. The HUD seemed the simplest of them all since it's already there, but it doesn't exactly give you a lot of real estate to work with. I saw that they're starting to build mini-projectors now which is pretty neat.

I don't know.. it was just a passing thought.
I think it is a good idea to consider other things on the HUD area. Could leave the HUD alone and shoot a display next to it.
No reason to write a new software program, can project whatever you can get on a laptop and there are a few GPS programs already there.
So the task is really to set up a small projector. Perhaps could shine it to a mirror then to the windshield? I wonder if you could get the projector smaller by taking it apart and placing the projector part where it needs to be? There are cooling issues with projectors and about 500 hours to a bulb. There is a little space under the dash. The projectors have some ability to adjust the image with things like "Keystone" adjustment to make the picture square if not due to the angle it is projected at.
