Hi All,
I'm trying to decide which intake to get for my Z. I like the HAlltech because it's real carbon fiber but it is kind of expensive at $500. I also like the Vortex because I had one on my old C5 but it collected dust like a vacuum cleaner. I think the HAll uses a better filter than the Breathless does  I think all the intakes are expensive for what you get but what's your opinion? Here is an image of the Halltech.

Joe - Have you considered a Donaldson Blackhawk with a Vortex or Halltech power duct?
I have but I really like the carbon fibre. I guess I am just trying to justify the cost and see if anyone has used one and can validate Halltech's claim of 16 rwhp.
Hi Joe! I vote for the Vortex, and can claim the HP increase!
I Dyno'ed my 02 stock coupe before and after the vortex install, and I gained 21 RWHP! I think the vortex is safer than the halltech, regarding water ingestion!
Regarding Carbon Fiber intake, I can give you some interesting info about it. E mail me, and we'll discuss offline!:)
The Halltech T-1 sidewinder does not have a water ingestion problem!!! I would have to doubt claims of 21 RWHP from an air intake alone on anybodys brand.
I'm in the same place. I cannot decide between the Vortex/ Halltech/Blackwing. I know the blackwing does not produce as much HP as the Vortex and Halltech but it is close. I have looked at the K&N but want a true bottom breater (In Vegas you do not have to worry about water) I'm waitning for Halltech to go on sale or a better price for the Vortex with Power coupler and MAF ends. I have been doing research on every system and have figured out one thing. They all work close to each other on the HP but its how pretty you want it to be. I'll probably go with the Vortex but still waiting for Vararam to do some dyno testing.
Think of all the things we buy for our cars that are "appearance" items only that cost big bucks. Spending a little more for the intake of your choice is certainly justifiable! While I personally believe that most of the intakes create similar HP gains, I choose the Halltech for it's great looks and great customer service. (Plus 17HP on the dyno) While I have the Tric, the new Sidewinder is probably a safer choice given the small potential for water ingestion.
I would go with the Vortex (I did) or Proflow, they are about the same. The Halltech you are looking at is a sidewinder, which does not benfit from cold air, so you won't get as good of gains on the street, Halltech makes a tric system that is cold air. The Donaldson with a cold air box will also produce about the same gains, but its more expensive.
All cold air systems perform the same in that they all expose a hi flow filters to the oncoming cool air. There is no ram effect, that is simply a marketing term. Too many turns, the filter, and the slow speeds cars can attain, do not enable positive atmosphere.
Simply unshrouding the stock airbox is about 80% the gain. Exposing it to cold air is the other 20%
Buying a cold air system comes down to looks and price preferences.
The vararam is a neat idea but i question the validity of it having a ram effect even if you could reach the necessary speeds for it to happen. The car is designed for air to go around the car and the ducting in the nose is probably a low pressure area. I don't know for sure but just thinking aloud.
Whta was your baseline. I also have a 2002 coupe That I am ordering mods for now. I can't figure out which one is better, the BLACKWING or VORTEX.
I've got the halltech, but its not a sidewinder. My setup uses the Halltech Mag and polished aluminum tric with a racers wedge filter. The filter sits a few inches off the ground...a true bottom feeder. :D
I haven't dynoed the car yet so I can't give you any numbers, but there was a definite difference in pull after installing the halltech.
Before the halltech, punching from a 30 mph roll in first gear just made the tires bark. With the halltech, punching from a 30 mph roll breaks the tires lose and they hop and scream all the to 60, and do it all over again when I shift into second. I don't get any real traction until shifting into 3rd at 75 mph and the tires still bark and hop a little. Same thing shifting into 4th at 103mph.
No ingestion problems, and I have driven her through some deep puddles and through several decent down pours. ToplessTexan has the same setup, and he probably loves his just as much I love mine.
Do it for the looks. Do it for the power!
I love Halltech. I even went so far as to call Jim and let him know that I appreciated seeing a quality product such as his. I also got the Mag in red Kevelar $$. Well worth the cost.
If you get the Halltech make sure you get the latest filter.... it's the one that has a velocity stack like the Vortex. On second thought ....just get the Vortex in Carbon Fiber and put the savings towards headers or something else.
Anyone wanting a Halltech Carbon Fiber best get it on order NOW, they will be ( I think) discontinuing them, and going with the T1C...........
At least this is the percieved word I get/got from a post by Mr. Hall................
That is true, it looks like Jim is going to let the TRIC fade away. The sidewinder is getting great reviews and will be replacing the TRIC soon. :yesnod:
borba, I forsee that also coming down the pike( TRIC).......but, my post is in reference to the Carbon Fiber duct only.............
The Composite(plastic) model is so much less in cost, the CF jobs are not moving.............
And, the Sidewinder is putting down at or above the same #'s on the dyno...........
With a near Zero risk of ingestion............ ;)
