I'm wondering if I really need to use MDF if its not a sealed enclosure. I'm just trying to make a new cover for the rear compartment in my coupe for 2 subs and I don't want to use the factory cardboard piece for a few reasons. I've just used particle board in the past for setups like this, I just want to do the right thing. Thanks in advance
You can use plywood. You will sacrifice a little sound I am sure depending on how much air you plan on moving with sub/speaker. You can also use Plexiglas. Not the thin stuff. 3/4" I believe will make a super nice looking box and you will have a clear one on top that. Not the cheapest approach though. Good luck with it and post up a couple pics when your finished so others can learn from new ideas
I have been using Baltic Birch Plywood for a quite a few years now, stronger, half the weight(approx), holds screws better, etc......
I like to mold the bottom, sides, whatever I can to the shape of factory steel(in some places the FG on a Vette is stiff enough, so that I can save even more weight.
I have a 2.2 cube sealed enclosure for a 15" sub in my TT, Solo, Audio comp car that weighs only 20 lbs empty but is incredibly strong and none resonate. (that is one of my other cars, not one of my Vettes
