I'm having some SERIOUS clicking and popping from the left rear. I am parking the car tonight as I am scared to drive it.
The car is silent on smooth roads. If I come across ANY surface irregularities, click/pop! I cannot see anything underneath that looks to be loose or any bushings that appear to be torn.
A couple things I have noticed though. The car seems VERY unsettled during transitions, and almost any manouever will kick off active handling.
I'm thinking it MAY be a blown shock (Bilstein Sports).
I reached up under there (woohoo) just now and grabbed and pulled on everything I could get my hands on. Everything was solid...EXCEPT, my left side half shaft seemed to have some VERY minor play in it, whereas the right side seemed to be solid as a rock.
This is getting very unnerving.
Has anybody come across this scenario before?
I'm going to have my local mechanic come around and see what he thinks it may be.
Still leaning towards a shock myself.
MattG was thinking it may be a CV Joint or wheel bearing, but I'd think that those noises would be more consistant then intermittent with bumps in the road.
Re: [TECHIES!!] SERIOUS LR clicks and pops... (70L46)
Car is low mileage, but HARD mileage. Nassau is pure city driving. 20,000 miles. Bear in mind that I go through a set of tires in 8,000 miles, a set of brakes in about 10,000 miles, killed the stock clutch in 13,000 miles. The car is driven hard, but I maintain it as best as I know how. I have not gotten into a problem like this before that could be just about anything by the sounds of it from the diff to the CV's to the half shaft to the bearing to the shock...
I'd rather not replace pieces bit by bit and spend a small fortune until I get the correct part. And NO, the car is NOT going to the local dealer.

Well, I am going to take a small gamble and go with my shock prediction.
I just ordered a new set of rear Bilstein Sports.
Worse case scenario, I spend a couple hundred bux in parts (I'll keep the old ones for spares) and about 30 minutes or so for the install of the new shocks in the rear.
When I have the tire and shocks off, I'll retorque everything I can get my hands on to make sure everything is as it should be...and we will see if we still click.
If it is STILL making noise at that point, I can only think that it is drivetrain related...

Neill,
If you have the metal end links, I wouldn't waste time with that. I am assuming no fluid leaks, no deposits of grease (from bad CV joint) on the inside of the back rims, fluid level checks okay in the rear. Just based on what we know so far, I'm voting for half shaft or carrier for the rear bearing may be fried. That has happened on my truck, when we put the 3.73's in my Tahoe, the rear carrier had to be replaced, but have not heard of that trouble on C5's. I had a LR wheel bearing freeze up on a C3 long ago but it gave me plenty of warning going down the highway...the screech of ball bearings getting upset....from intermittant to pretty much constant howl.

Now that you mention it...
I do have traces of oil...but on the right side, of my transfer case...almost as if the metal is starting to go porous. But the car has never dripped any oil, so I have not taken it to be too serious of a problem.
I may see if I can get a mechanic to check the boots and tranny and transfer case for proper fluid levels.
