I recently purchased a RJS 5 point harness from Summit Racing. They had mentioned I can mount the belts except the one between my legs to the stock bolts already holding the seat. Can anyone help me for suggestions to installing them? Do I have to purchase a bar to go across the back on the headrests? Im trying to avoid that but of course I want it to be set up the best..Thanks alot
You will need at a min a "harness bar" which will allow you to mount the shoulder straps. The outside belt could be mounted under your retractable shoulder belt however, then the plastic cover will not fit.The inside belts (or buckle part on your seat) mount to the seat track, making a clean mount virtually impossible. far better to drill through the side/rear of the center tunnel and install the belt on its own bolt with a 4x4 steel plate backer.Jack the car up and look BEFORE you drill,as your fuel lines run through this area ! The bolt will be approx 1" above the floor and 3-5 inches from the rear panel behind the seat. Not quite easy but not bad.
Even with a harness bar, the stock seats on a Z06 do not allow the shoulder belts to rest properly on your shoulders. They will be too far to the side. In the event of a crash, you don't want to be flying out from between those belts, or have your collar bones snapped like a twig. You must either install a racing seat that allows the belts to pass though in proper relation to your neck, or modify your stock seat to allow the belts to pass through the back rest. There are kits available to modify the stock seats into "sports seats" with the hole for the racing belts. Also, if you want to use a HANS device, which you should be, you must have a racing seat so the belts line up properly with the HANS.
Also, be careful where you attach your seat belts. I suggest you get one of the recognized harness bar setups, like Bray-Krause or Hardbar, including the seat belt adapters.
If you are running on the track, don't do a half-way job. The forces involved in a high speed crash are tremendous, and nothing to fool with. With people who are looking for cheap helmets, we say "how much is your head worth?" With this kind of setup, you should be asking "how much is my life worth?" Do it right, or just stick with the stock seat belt.
