There are two main sources of tuning software and each comes with proprietary equipment (I'm skipping talking about a GM Tech2 because of limitations and cost)

The two brands are:
HP Tuners -- http://www.hptuners.com/
EFI Live -- www.efilive.com

Both companies keep a sharp eye on the other and compete quite strongly -- this leads to a feature-rich application on both sides. Both companies are innovative and brilliant.

Which one is best is mainly personal preference, and I've found that most people who strongly recommend one have never even seen the other.

I've used both extensively, although I haven't looked at HPT in years, so my knowledge of their recent products is lacking.

Both have a learning curve that can be quite steep (and frustrating). In my opinion, HPT is easier to learn for basic things, but in the end EFI is much easier (once you are past the learning curve and used to the GUI). Both have forums that offer a wealth of information and lots of people willing to help. Personally, I like EFI due to its customizability -- I can make it exactly how I want it to be. I couldn't do that in HPT (several years ago -- may be different now).

HPT -- http://www.hptuners.com/forum/
EFI -- http://forum.efilive.com/

IMO, take a look at each product and see which metaphor most closely matches your experience tuning, then use that product. It will be much easier to learn electronic tuning if what you see on the screen is intuitive to you. My preference for EFI is probably due to the fact that the tables seem "right" to me, whereas with HPT I was also have to do a quick translation in my head

jarda,

I am glad to see you are opern minded enough to go with self tuning.

As stated above there are a few tuning options. I use and recommend HP Tuners.

If you are ready, try searching on EFI tuning and see what you come up with.
