I have a '98 C5 that has a headlight switch problem. If the engine is running and I turn the headlight switch on, the headlight doors will not open. However, if the engine is turned off and the ignition switch is in accessory mode, the doors will open and the lights will come on just fine.
Any ideas on what is going on?
I thought I should post the resolution to this problem in case another member has a similar problem and reads this thread while searching for a solution.
I searched the forum for headlight problems and found that a couple other members had similar problems that were resolved by tightening the battery terminal connections. I tightened each terminal connection about a quarter of a turn and the problem was fixed.
Sometimes it is really something simple. Once again, this forum provides a wealth of valuable information.
I have a 2000 Vette. The driver side headlight will not open. I have been under the hood and turned a **** that seemed to work once or twice. Then it goes back to not opening.

Any suggestions on what I need to have replaced?
In your case, the gear is probably stripped out therefore you need to replace with a brass one.
That's not normal. You should be able to turn them on even though the car is off. If you turn the headlamp switch to the parking lamp position, does the odometer appear in the DIC? If you turn the headlamp switch all the way, do the lamps turn on but not raise?
I will have to check it out. I haven't checked to see if the lamps turn on when they don't pop up and I'm not sure on the odometer. It is kind of a pain to have to start the car to wash the lights! They work perfectly when the car is running.
I'm guessing that your headlamp switch is bad but lets not get too far past this as it was the OP's thread and other's will start to get confused. The OP has resolved his issue.
I checked them and now they are working properly. I have only owned the car for about 6 weeks and have not tried to turn them on without the car running for awhile. I did go in and shut off the twilight sentinel a few weeks ago so maybe that had something to do with the way that the lights were working. I am not sure if I have tried to turn the lights on without the car running since I made that change. Thank you for the advice!!
