Thinking of changing out the thermostat , 48k miles on the vech. I called the dealer and of course they said you cant get it from them by itself, have to buy the waterpump to get the thermostat. So my question is what brand of aftermarket thermostats would be best.
Hi, others may have different opinions, but if I were changing a t stat I would use only a Moto Rad type if it comes in the heat range I needed. It is the only t stat that I know of that, if it fails, it fails in the open position, which saves you from overheating till you can replace it. No other t stat that I know of does this. Others fail in the closed position and the way you know it failed is by overheating and being stranded.

I'm sure they meant the water neck, not the whole pump.
You know the sad part is that I used to work there with them . I asked the parts man about that and he told me that was the only way that they sold it so told him no thanks, so thats why I was asking about a aftermarket t-stat . Thanks for your reply's
Buy one from Gene Culley at www.gmpartshouse.com, using the part number that I posted earlier. It should only cost around $50 for a GM 187 degree thermostat with housing.
as much as I hate to adimit it my water pump went out so I bought a new delco one from napa and took the old one off and was in the middle of the job when I realized it didnt come with a new thermostat. It was 7pm on a sunday night and since my vette was my only way of transportation I had to have it running by monday. So I went to autozone and got a duralast one and it has suprised me and been perfect for the last 20k.
Stant's part number for the correct thermostat is #14298. It's $16.99 at Advance (includes the housing). They (Advance) have it listed as #14948, but that is not the correct part number. Ask me how I know.
