Default Intake manifold time, need advice!

Hi, I've got a 2001 coupe that needs to breathe better, here is a list of the mods done so far:

vararam cai
vararam air bridge
ported/polished 78mm throttle body
stock manifold (ls6 manifold???)
patriot stage 2 heads
thunder racing cheatr cam
long tubes, high flow cats, no mufflers

The car is putting out 406/383 to the wheels and my tuner said it was being choked for air, thus the need for a new manifold. I was set on a new weiand street warrior but we all know thats not going to happen. My primary goal is to not lose low end power as that is where I spend most of the time. I know very little about manifolds but I've heard that I could lose some low end power with a fast 92? Any advice would be great!

I don't think you lose any bottom end with a FAST. I have a ported FAST 90/LS2 TB setup, and it improved power from idle up. Since you already have H/C, a FAST setup would be the next logical addition.

I agree with a FAST 92. This is going to be my next mod...

Thanks for the info! Is there a way to hook it up to my ported 78mm tb? If I have to buy another tb it will probably push me way past my budget . I've seen people doing port work on the FAST intakes, with no experience would it be possible for me to do it or would I risk destroying the intake?

A ported FAST 92/92 is a must have mod for H/C motors. Gains are typically 15-20whp more over just a stock FAST 92. Get in contact with Tony Mamo @ AFR and get one off him and have him port it. I have seen ridiculous gains with his worked over FAST manifolds.

You could use your 78mm TB with the FAST 78 mm intake. Gains are not as great as the 90-92 setups. The 78 mounts with 3 bolt, and the 90 with 4.

even if you just get a FAST 92, I don't think the 90 is made anymore, you can get a new LS2 throttle body 90mm for pretty cheap.

this will definitely wake up your heads/cam/headers car

So a stock ls2 tb will work? Anyone know where I can pick up a used ported version? I'm trying to do this on a budget (I installed all of the mods myself, it was fun and saved $) so new is probably out of the question .

The FAST 78mm has been discontinued. You would have to find a used one if you wanted to go that route, just an FYI.

A stock LS2 TB will work just fine.

We have the FAST 92's on sale for $799 shipped to your door.

I do not have any spare LS2 TB's, but I do have a 90mm Comtech TB that I would make you a good package deal on with the intake.

If you are interested, just shoot me a pm and we will talk

I hate to be the only different opinion--but my experience is that the fast 92/90 combo is an overkill for a stock cubed engine--taking into the acct your stage 2 hds and mild cam. maybe with a huge cam and super ported hds and an engine running constantly over 6500 , a stock cubed motor might work---But--your hds at .400 lift ( which is the average lift most people use for comparisons) is only 246 cfm and a stock LS6 flows 243 cfm---So your hds are basically a cleaned up version of a LS6 hd. Your cam is very mild and at 114 LSA and i have had no problems tuning this cam and having it pass strict Calif. emmisions. If you have a minute look at this TPS intake maifold comparison--In a nutshell the 92/90 combo did make a bit more power str8 accross the board--but not much more below 6400 RPM's--
To me spending $2500 on a ported 92/90 combo to net about 5 HP is not woth the money or effort--If you are going to run your engine constantly over 6400 then you may see about 15 more HP up there.
You would be better off getting a differnt cam in the 235-240 range with .600 lift at a 112 LSA---I have seen the TSP torquer cam make and additional 18 RWHP over a GM hot cam with a LS6 intake, stock hds.

tblu92, thanks for adding another perspective. That is what I was worried about, speding $1k+ and not gaining much over what I've currently got. The specs on the cam that I have from thunder racing are: 214/230 .601/.575 117 LSA and I believe the cam card said it was 216/233 .604 117 LSA.

I would love to put in a better cam but I just can't bring myself to tear the car apart again, no time or energy to do it . I was hoping the weiand would come out as it seemed like a good compromise and came with a reducer plate so I could use my stock tb. I rarely spin the engine over 6200rpm and I believe the fuel cut off is set at 6400 or 6600.

Is there a good alternative to the fast that would work well under 6400rpms? The tpis spyder looks like a different design with the opening on top, would it work on my setup? I've heard bad things about metal parts getting heat soaked.

Rich@pm-fl.com, that looks like a great price, I will order it from you if I can't find a setup that works better! Do you do porting work or is it something an amateur like myself can do with a dremel?

Would this work with my car and the fast92?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ponti...Q5fAccessories

It's not too expensive for a ported tb.

With all due respect, I disagree that you need a monster cam to benefit from a FAST install. I've only got a 228/232, and got over 25RWHP when I changed from a LS6 mani. You have to admit, the article you get your information from is not objective, as the tests are conducted by TPIS, they obviously have a particular interest in making their products look best.

Actaually they report the Fast set up to make the most HP--I'm not saying you won't make more HP but the big #'s are all up in the RPM range--so on a daily driver type car that rarely sees 6400--it is an over kill----AND I am never impressed with dyno #'s--to me the dyno is ONLY a tuning tool--You can't win a race with a dyno slip--I have raced and beaten so many cars with max rated 425-440 RWHP . those big #'s only pop up briefly at 6400-6800---(with my 390 RWHP)--- It's the overall average HP and useable HP that makes you fast--not an inflated dyno slip--
You can't beat the LS6 intake as far as I'm concerned for most cars--although i did cave in and buy a Fast 78---I saw NO performance gains and no better ET's or MPH--As far as dyno HP? I don't care--
Each has his own opinion on this---But i will say TPIS is an old quality Co.--with no agenda and great people--they are racers and conducted this test to make their car faster----

Great thread. Escpecially since I am kicking around a FAST92 swap. ZEEVETTE, where did the additional HP start in the in regards to RPM on the dyno graph? What was the results for TQ gains or loss?

Thanks everyone for all of the input, it is all good and all very confusing . I know I'm choked for air up top (according to my tuner) so an intake manifold would help I believe. Unfortunately because I don't spend all of my time at 6400rpms it might be a bit of a waste. It looks like I could try swapping out cams for something like a 228/228 112 to get some more low/mid range power but the cost on that is going to be fairly high. On the manifold front it's looking like a fast with a new tb will also be quite expensive but easier to install. I really don't like the cheatr cam, it's very soft until 4k rpms. The engine also has a VERY loud tick from the cam (so I've been told) so changing cams would help in that regard also. I'm up in the air right now, any thoughts?

We do offer a porting service. $125 for any intake purchased from us. This is not something I would recommend trying on your own if you do not have experience with the FAST manifold.

I agree with ZeeVette on this. I have exactly the same cam as he does and I have experienced similar results with a FAST 90 on an LS2. My set up actually leaves some low-end on the table because I have 1 7/8 headers and my TFS 225's with stock gaskets have cut the static compression a couple of tenths. I still get 345-350 RWTQ at 2,500 RPM's. My car moves out smartly under nearly any conditions, though I can't really use full throttle very often. Your cam should be fine on low-end with the FAST unless it is retarded. If you have an adjustable timing chain, advance the cam to +4 or +5 and you'll have more bottom end than your tires can handle.
