Default Cam Recomendations

I would like you guys input on a cam.
Car belongs to a friend is a '98 roadster, Auto, stock. He has fully ported LS-1 heads with larger SS valves and better springs and an LS-6 intake. Goal is as close as possible to 400RWHP without further mods. He says maybe a convertor/gears in the future. Maybe! Car is only driven as pleasure vehicle, not more than 4-5K miles per year.

The kicker is that he does not want to have to do any tuning to the factory computer program, so that is what I believe to be the limiting factor. I do not think that a solid roller fits the bill in this case.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,
Aaron

I've got a cam similar to Thunder Racing's 224. Altogether, we got 388 rwhp. I don't believe that 400 rwhp is practical without PCM tuning. If he's going to add a new torque converter and maybe a 3.42, then PCM is required. My advice would be to do the cam and TC/gears at the same time.

No PCM tuning, that not possible, even with a mild cam. The car will never run right and the air/fuel ratio would be to rich, idle would be a big problem. Drill a hole in the throttle body. Try to get 400rwhp on an auto is hard enough.
This friend want hp, but he is not to realistic.
Hey don't listen to me, I don't know much about these technical engines (LS-1)!

Your friend will HAVE to do PCM tuning if he wants the car to run right at all.He has to do it just to get the AF mixtures right. He will have to raise the idle speed up just so it will not die or excessively lope at idle and he cannot do it at 600 rpm, it has to be raised to between 800 & 900 rpm.He will NOT get over the 400 hp barrier with a mild cam.Mine is a 112lsa and with the TC not locked I am at 411 hp.I have not seen too many other A4's over 400. There are a few like Morpheus knocking hard on the door . He is also going to have a hard time with ls1 heads they just do not flow enough, you need ls6 heads to get the extra #'s.You also did not say anything about headers. You need a set of Long tubes to open things up and let 'em breath also will give some extra HP. You don't want to go to aggressive with an automatic. When I was doing just heads/cam I bought an MMS 218/218 cam. I then decided to go with a 388 so I sent the cam back and am going to use a 229/229 cam, but for stock displacement, 218/218 is a good size.

I gotta agree with CJONES, the MMS 218 cam is great!! With stock or Hypertech tuning, mine runs fine, and idles OK @ 600 RPM (manual trans). Over 400 rwhp with an A4 without pcm tuning will be a challenge

What company is MMS? Can you give me the complete specs for the 218/218 (adv dur, LSA, lift w/ 1.7, ect.)? May consider having a custom grind by Comp done if they offer something similar. The friend is adamant that he does not want to do tuning. I have tried and tried to talk him into the tuning, but he refuses. Since I forgot, he has long tubes and just purchased B&B back half.

What is the most one can expect (RWHP wise) if the tuning is not performed. Any idea of what the largest cam one can do w/out the computer tuning?

I appreciate all the replies.

MMS is Morgan Motorsports, they are a forum supporter, look to the right for their logo. This cam is 218 degrees duration @.05", .561" lift, intake and exhaust, with a 114 degree LSA. While mild on the duration and LSA, it does seem to work VERY well, for a smog legal daily driver. How does your friend feel about drilling a hole in the throttle body blade? That's all they had to do to get mine to idle well (manual trans, remember)

Can you provide the details on the modified TB? Are you likewise running the modded heads, headers, and LS-6 intake? Just curious as to what all is required. It would seem that an IAC motor would take care of this, but I don't know. What adds the additional fuel?

What are the factory cam specs?

I just wish he would do the right thing and pay for the programming.

Thanks,

Aaron

400rwhp without tuning and a big cam will never happen. You need a pretty big cam to hit 400+ in an A4 and with he cam come computer tuning.I think you should just wait and save up the $$$ to do it all. That's what I did.My goal is along the lines of what JW got on his.
