Default Water pump woes

At 53k the water pump on my '98 took a dive. Ordered and installed one Sat. afternoon, after spending quite a while scraping the old gaskets off. Decided to change belts and hoses while down because of age factor. Got it together, fired it and the new pump leaked. Took off coveralls, shut off shop lights, and went in the house. Yesterday took off new leaky pump, returned it, and ordered replacement. Put it on today, and so far so good. Am I lucky, or has this happened to anyone else?

Did you buy a genuine GM pump or at least a new, not rebuilt? If you bought a rebuilt unit, then I can see where there may have been a defect. Otherwise, maybe just a fluke.

You had to scrape the gaskets off? I've never had to do that with an o-ring type gasket before. How did it get baked on there like that after only 53K?

Default water pump

Tried to buy a GM because I liked the bolt on pulley setup, but was told there were none in the pipeline. Bought a new aftermarket with the pressed on pulley--hard to see the weephole. Guess I was fluked from the start.

Default gaskets

98s had conventional gaskets--the techs probably complained about scraping--I replaced them with the O-ring type--much nicer.

97-98s had gaskets that were WELDED to the block! Took an hour to get the surfaces clean.

The newer O ring gaskets are a sinch!
